The letters uPVC is an acronym for unplasticized polyvinyl chloride. PVC pipes are made up of plasticized polyvinyl chloride. Unplasticized is also referred to as rigid PVC. In construction, uPVC is a material used instead of wood sometimes. It requires less maintenance than wood does. UPVC windows are windows with surrounding uPVC.

When talking about windows uPVC just refers to double glazed windows. This is because the frame is often made out of uPVC. Double glazed windows, also called insulating glass units, or IGUs, are used for insulation, They help protect against temperature and sound.

Double glazed windows are windows that are made out of two pieces of glass. The glass is put into frames that sits them just a tiny bit apart from each other. This creates a space in between. The space is filled with with vacuum, or with some kind of gas that insulates. Of different kinds of insulating windows, uPVC windows are one of the easiest to see through.

Double glazed windows insulate by filling the gap in the windows with a non-conductive gas. Vacuum is also used. Sound doesn’t travel through vacuum, so less sound will be able to get through the vacuum and into the house. Also heat and cold don’t travel well through vacuum, so they are also stopped. This is the same principle as vacuum thermoses use.

The best insulator is a vacuum, but very few uPVC windows use this. That is because the window has to be very strong to contain a vacuum. A partial vacuum can be used, but this is uncommon. A partial vacuum means they have removed some of the air, but not all of it. Usually a gas is used though. This can be argon, xenon, or krypton.

These three gasses are used because they are not harmful and safe to use. They are odorless, and have no color, so they don’t distort the view. The cheapest of these three gasses is argon, and it is what is usually used for uPVC windows. Krypton is used for windows with a very tight space, or for windows that need to be very high performing. Xenon is the most expensive of these gasses, and it is rarely used at all.

The reason to use uPVC windows is to help improve the efficiency of your house, and save money on energy. Any time you are trying to keep the inside of your house a different temperature from the outside you are using energy to do so. Insulation makes it so you don’t have to use as much. This can save you money on your electric bill, and makes your house more environmentally friendly.
