I’ve always been a fan of history, I like reading about ancient civilizations, people, and places.

This love of mine for historical things perhaps was triggered by my grandfather. He once told me that time is the only constant thing in this world the only thing one can’t fight against.

Everything ages from the sand under your feet to the moon and the stars everything is a constant cycle of death and life but all of them are under the caring eye of time.

My grandfather used to talk to me about the great empires of the old. One being the great Roman empire, that once almost ruled the entire world.

He once told me that even now their influence is still being felt around the globe in fact even inside our own house.

I asked what he was talking about.

He looked at me and pointed at our window, “Well there’s nothing significant about our window.” I told him.

Then he told me to look at the window blinds.

I looked at it, it was made of a creamy white fabric with a soft luminescent glow coming from the outside, it covers half of the window.

“Grandpa you mean to tell me, that window blind is that old? From the time of the Roman Empire?”

My grandfather laughed and told me “No, no, no we bought this from a website it is that new. But this technology and this beauty is from the time of the Roman Empire.”

“You mean this window blind is being used in Rome? In Ancient Rome?”

“Yes, yes it is being used by great emperors and nobles in their coliseum.”

“A lot of buildings were being created around that time so dust and pollution are always around and because of the dry and very hot climate they come to settle inside their homes. At first it was damp clothes until the Roman Blind was created.”

“You see Romans produced the technology of this specific kind of blind very simple, a Roman blind is produced from woven cloth fabric which can be raised or lowered as one would want it. This is done by cords threaded through rings attached at the back. The result is either a tear-drop shaped or flat folding shaped depending on the wish of the Roman.”

It made me stare at that particular piece of art as I see it for a week or so until my grandfather taught me how to create one from old blankets.

Today I have all these Roman blinds in my house and I have them not only because I like history but also to remind me of my beloved Grandfather.
