If you have a living room that is a little smaller than most and you would love to make it look more spacious, you can easily accomplish that. By using the right color, furnishings and pattern, a room can be made to look and feel more spacious. A room can be made to look nearly twice as large as it actually is with decorating, as there are many ways to “trick” the eye. The ideas in this article will help you make your living room look more appealing as well as make it look larger.
Light colors equal space
Lots of people know that a room can be made to look more spacious with the use of lighter colors, while darker colors look heavier and tend to make the room look smaller. This doesn’t mean that the walls have to be a boring off-white or cream. You can use an light, soft shades of yellow, green or any pale color. You can add some depth to the room with small splashes of darker colors by using accessories.
Increase the height of the room
How is this possible? A vertically striped pattern on the wall can easily accomplish this. If possible, paint the stripes yourselves, or use a wallpaper with a striped pattern. Something else to consider would be hanging pictures or other décor higher on the wall than usual, or using white crown molding where the wall and ceiling meet to pull the eye upwards.
Light up the room
Rooms that offer lots of natural light or artificial light simply look larger than dark and gloomy rooms. Allow plenty of light to flow through the room using blinds, curtains or other window treatments if you have lots of windows. Otherwise, floor lamps, table lamps and track lighting can be use to bring more light to the space.
You also want to make sure to keep open pathways to the doors that come into the room. Be sure to not block doorways with accessories or furniture. In order to make the living room more inviting consider creating more intimate spaces where you can entertain guests by arranging the furniture at an angle, or placing you sofa, love seat and chair around a nice area rug.
Smaller rooms need furniture that is sleek and scaled down as opposed to heavy, bulky looking items. You also need to avoid complex patterns that are simply loud and busy. A small pattern would be something to go with, or you can use textures and fabrics to add interest.
Don’t forget that a beautiful mirror can work magic. Mirrors can make your living room appear twice as big if you place them to reflect light from a window. If you don’t want a cluttered look, keep accessories to a minimum; simply use a few key accents to breathe life into the room.
If you put these ideas to use, you’ll create a welcoming and beautiful living room that looks more spacious than it actually is. By using the right colors, patterns and light, it is quite amazing as to what you can accomplish. Easy to do, as long as you remember to keep it light, bright, airy and uncluttered.
