Decorating 101: Formal Dining Rooms

Is your dining room beginning to feel dull and boring? If it is, It might be time to redecorate the room. Many things can help bring more life and style to your dining room while keeping it all tied together. The tips given here are great for styling any dining room.

1.The dining room should have an area rug that pulls all the colors together. There should be enough room on the rug to fit it under the table and chairs, even if the chairs are pulled out. However, your rug shouldn’t be so big that there is no room between the rug and walls.

To measure for your rug you should probably add about four feet in every direction to the length and width of the table. If you are going for a totally new look go for something different with your rug and redecorate the room based on the new rug.

2. Your dining room table should have a centerpiece. Using a flower arrangement will add some color to the room. Candles can give the room decorative light, or you can use a glass bowl or vase with fruit to add an earthy tone to the room. Be creative when it comes to your centerpieces. Depending on the season, or just your mood, you should change the centerpiece.

3. A new piece of artwork or set of shelves can add style to the room. Look around the walls to check if you have nothing on the walls. You have a choice of working with one or multiple pieces of artwork, as long as they don’t create clutter and you hang them on a wall that will tie them all together. You also have the option of hanging one or two shelves on the wall and putting pictures, candles or other décor items on them for decoration.

4. Use the dining room table in a way that adds style to the room. Setting out a nice china set with placemats or a beautiful tablecloth with add a finished look to the room. This will help give the room an inviting tone instead of a cold and uninviting one to guests.

You can keep your main setting by simply changing the place settings on the table, this way you have a fresh look for the table and you don’t get bored of it without changing every single thing.

5. Add more style to the room with a new light fixture. Tall standing lamps can add more lighting to a room when placed in the corner, but chandeliers above the dining room table would be perfect. When choosing a chandelier make sure it fits the style of the room. Adjust the height of the chandelier in order to give you the right amount of light for the room.

You have many choices when it comes to changing up your dining room and adding style to it. Think about your ideal dining room, be creative and make the look you want for the room happen.

How To Decorate With Vibrant Color Without Going Overboard

Do you lately walk into your home and feel that something is lacking? Sometimes things just look dull, flat, and even a little boring. People often make the mistake of decorating their home in white, beige, brown, and other bland, monotonous colors. If you want your room to have personality and interest, you’re going to need to add some color! Whether it’s little splashes or big bold accents, color will change the way you look at your home.

Every home can have personality. You want the décor to be vibrant and to attract the eye. Colors that are lifeless, like beige and white, do little to spark any interest. A few great colors will really liven up the place, although you certainly don’t have to use dramatic colors such as bright red and passionate purple. Here are some great colors tips to help you transform your home from drab to dramatic.

Transform the Walls
If you’re looking to make a big transformation while adhering to a budget, painting the walls is a great way to go. Before you start, though, you need to figure out what colors you’re going to use in your furnishings and accents. After all, you want all the colors to complement or contrast one another. If springtime hues are your thing, consider using bright greens, peaches, yellows, and blues. Hang a botanical print on that spring green wall to add a cheeriness to the room that is hard to ignore.

Whatever colors you end up going with, try painting only a wall or two, leaving the rest white. What this does is add depth and dimension to the room. Paint the baseboards with either a contrasting color or a much deeper shade of that same color.

Floors Are for More Than Just Walking!
When decorating your home, don’t forget to include your floors in the big picture. Wood floors, tile, or carpet can all be dressed up. Liven up those wood or tile floors by topping them with brightly colored accent rugs in strategic areas. Just be sure you’re choosing patterns that reflect the rest of your décor. Go with whatever suits your decorating style, whether it’s florals, plaids, abstracts, or geometrics. You can use area rugs even if you only have carpeting. A rug would look great placed in front of the couch or in the center of a furniture grouping where you often entertain.

What About Furnishings?
Here’s where you can really start to have fun. Many people assume that you shouldn’t mix and match patterns. For a floral sofa with bright hues of green, yellow, and blue, you might add striped and plaid throw pillows containing the same colors. You’ll be amazed by the result, which is simply stunning. Add in some throws, tapestries, or anything else that will give you a big bold splash of color! Large throw pillows with loud patterns, colorful throws, and brightly colored quilts can pick up any solid colored furnishings.

With color and pattern, you can liven up any dull look. Figure out what colors you love and use your imagination. So grab some paint, a few area rugs, some throw pillows and tapestries, and other accents, and get started!

With color, you can infuse your home with energy and personality without spending a whole lot of money. The look and atmosphere of a room can be completely transformed for very little cost. If you’re looking for some bang for your buck, go with big splashes of color. Go ahead and be daring, and you’ll ensure that you’ll never walk into a boring room in your home again.

Simple Tips To Decorate Your Fire Place

Some people choose not to use their fireplace as a place to build a fire, usually for warmth, for various reasons. A fireplace can still be used to add some style to a room, even if its not being used to radiate heat into your home. Fortunately, there plenty of ways to add some interest to a room by decorating the inside of a fireplace.

Fill the Fireplace with Candles
Place several different pillar candles of all different sizes in the fireplace and light them. Now you can still get some warmth and light from the fireplace without having to build a fire in it. You want to be sure that the candles are on fireproof plates or containers. You can add even more interest to the fireplace by choosing decorative plates and holders. Candle make a terrific decor piece, whether they’re lit or unlit. Stick with all plain or off-white candles, or if youre feeling a little adventurous mix up different colors and styles.

Add a Flower Arrangement inside the Fireplace
Adding a large flower arrangement to the inside of your fireplace is a great way to add some color to things. For an added touch, use a decorative basket or vase to hold the flowers. Just be sure to measure the opening of the fireplace before buying or making your arrangement. In order to keep it from seeming too overpowering, it should be kept several inches away from the inside walls. A T-shaped arrangement usually makes the best fit inside the fireplace.

Use a Decorative Fireplace Screen for the Area
If you’d rather not see the inside of your fireplace, place a nice decorative fireplace over the opening. There are some very nice screens available in a variety of different styles. You should have very little difficulty finding one that goes well with the style of the fireplace and matches the dcor of your room. If you have a really old fireplace and havent gotten around to refinishing it yet, then this is a great option.

Make It Look Like a Real Fireplace with Wood Logs
Your fireplace can still be enjoyed, even if you dont light it. All you need to do is add some nice real or fake wood logs and arrange them in a pleasing pattern. Guests in your home wont even be able to tell if the fireplace doesnt work or if you simply dont use it. Just be sure to clean the fireplace before putting the logs in there. Then you will be able to enjoy the scene without the hassle of a real fire.

No matter the reason why you dont use your fireplace, you dont want to let that instant attention grabber go to waste. Try one of these ideas to decorate the inside of the fireplace. In doing so, you’ll be able to add more style and originality to your decor.

Create a playroom your kids will love!

With a playroom, your child can have his or her own room in the house to have fun in. Most parents love the idea of getting their child’s toys out of sight and into one room. But this doesn’t mean that the playroom should not have functional decorating. Here are some great ideas for creating a playroom that is not only perfect for a child but functional for you.

Have Plenty of Storage Options
By providing plenty of storage options, you can keep the playroom neat and organized. Its decidedly easier for kids to keep things clean when everything in the room has a proper place. You want to make sure you have plenty of organization and storage so that your child’s playroom doesn’t end up looking like a tornado blew through it on a daily basis.

You might find pieces of furniture such as mission chests that also provide extra storage, or storage items such as plastic bins and shelving units.

Be sure that any small items, such as puzzles, art supplies, and other toys, are stored in individual baskets or bins.

Make the Playroom Room Durable
Unless you want it to get broken, dont put your favorite piece of furniture in your child’s playroom. Whether they’re boys or girls, children tend to be rough on furniture and other decorating items. The easiest way to keep the room durable is to keep any decor items simple and kid-friendly.

Use plastic bins and baskets for storage; they can also serve as decorations for the room. Find a rug with darker colors and patterns to hide any stains that might come. Also be sure that rug is easy to clean.

Keep Play Areas Safe for Your Kids
Bolt any dressers, bookcases, wood desks to the wall to prevent them from falling on a climbing child. If at all possible, use only child size furniture. Furniture that’s too tall can be unsafe for younger children. Small toys and art supplies should be stored up high where small children cant reach them. If you have a baby or toddler in the home, be sure to baby-proof the room by placing covers on all the outlets and getting rid of any hanging blind cords from the windows.

Let Your Child Have a Say in the Playroom
If your children have a say in how to decorate the playroom, they will enjoy that room so much more. You can easily ask for your child”s opinion on things such as the color of the walls or carpet. Even a themed playroom isn’t that difficult with simple things like stencils and stick-ons added to the walls.

In the end, if your child doesn’t like his or her playroom or is mad because its not what he or she wanted, that child is going to be less likely to want to play in that room and keep it clean. At least to a degree, you’ll find that it is far easier to allow your child some say in the decor of the room.

Your child’s favorite place in the house should be his or her playroom. Having their own space gives children a chance to be independent and creative while having fun. By following these decorating ideas, you’ll find that decorating a playroom can be a simple and inexpensive process.

How to Create a Black & White Retro Kitchen

Are you looking for a new theme for your kitchen? Consider a black-and-white retro theme. This style has become a classic, even though it’s a retro theme from way back when. If you’re considering a retro theme for your kitchen, then here are some tips to get you started.

Use Red as an Accent Color in the Kitchen
By using red as an accent color to the black and white scheme, you will make your retro kitchen look more authentic. Adding touches of red will bring some color and interest into the decor, yet will still help you keep the retro feeling. Have you ever seen a black-and-white diner or kitchen from years ago? They almost always incorporate red into the design. You can decide how much red you end up using in the kitchen. You can add smaller touches, such as with items like placemats and window treatments, or larger accents as with a backsplash or the color of a wall.

Flooring Options for a Retro Kitchen
For a retro kitchen, a black-and-white tiled floor will probably be your best option. You can definitely enhance that retro look by creating an alternating pattern of black and white tiles, which will give the room that old-diner feel. If you’re working with a limited budget, look for laminate flooring with a black-and-white checkered pattern. In a retro kitchen design, it’s usually best to avoid wood floors. But if you’re set on that type of flooring, then opt for a darker-colored wood. Then you always have the option of adding at least one black, white, or red area rug on top of the wood floor to complement the retro look.

Cabinets for a Retro Kitchen
It’s also a good idea to stay away from wood cabinets, just like the flooring. Rather, paint the cabinets white. Or depending on your wall color and how daring you want to be, you might consider painting them black. Retro pull handles in silver make great accents for the cabinets. A great way to get really creative is to make your own one-of-a-kind cabinet pulls, hand painting them with a checkered or geometric design.

Choosing Appliances for a Retro Kitchen
Refrigerators back in the day were white, and thus most kitchens had white appliances. Nowadays, you can play around with your appliance options a bit, as there are so many of them. Stainless steel appliances, for instance, would look great with a retro kitchen style. If you haven’t used that much black in the rest of the room, you might also go with black appliances. After all, you don’t need to completely limit yourself to retro options, but rather you can give your black-and-white retro kitchen a modern twist.

A black-and-white retro theme in the kitchen can really lend a unique look to the area. Just be sure to keep the room comfortable and inviting as well as stylish, as your family will be spending a lot of time in there.

Cozy Romantic and Shabby Chic

Are you one of those people who absolutely loves the antique look of worn furnishings, but you just don’t have the budget to redecorate your home at this time? Fortunately, you don’t need to go out and buy pricey antiques in order to achieve this look. Shabby chic décor will give your home the atmosphere you’re going for without costing you a bundle of money. This style is meant to feel cozy, relaxed, and very romantic. Shabby chic décor will have you feeling that warm, soft breeze floating across the room!

Soft and Sensuous
Many people, especially women, love the shabby chic style, with its feminine look of light and white-washed décor. You want the furniture to look just a little worn around the edges. Choose curtains in muted pastels that will blend softly with the rest of the room.

Go for fabrics that are satiny or nubby-or anything in between. You can even use ultra-smooth satins and nubby textures together, creating a more interesting look.

The older an accessory looks, the better, in shabby chic décor. You want to create a style that’s relaxed, comfortable, and a bit old-fashioned. It’s fine if the furnishings you currently have are more modern-you won’t have to go out and buy all new pieces. All you have to do is sand the finish off your coffee and end tables, and paint them an antique white color. Then you can lightly sand the edges and any other areas that would naturally wear to complete the look. This will give you the look of shabby chic-without you having to spend hundreds of dollars on new tables.

Elegance on a Budget
If you want a relaxed elegant look but need to stay within your budget, shabby chic is a great style option. Oftentimes, the perfect accent or accessory like a mission coffee table to this style can be found at a flea market. The old saying goes that “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure,” and this couldn’t be any truer than with shabby chic decorating.

In a shabby chic style, slip covers are almost a necessity. Start by covering your sofa with an antique white slip cover. Then you can add mismatched throw pillows that are similar in color but have different textures and patterns. For instance, as long as the colors are complementary, a satiny floral and a nubby plaid can make a stunning combination.

The Finishing Touches
So now that your furnishings are covered, what do you do to accessorize? Fortunately, shabby chic makes this super easy as well. Staples in shabby chic décor are flowers and other greenery. You can either buy a few fresh flowers at the market or pick some of your own if you have them. Find an old-looking vase for your wood dining room table, but don’t try to arrange them perfectly. You want the finished result to look a little thrown together. After all, the beauty of shabby chic is an elegant and relaxed look that’s not too perfect.

Another area where you can get a little creative is the lighting. Perfect lighting options for this décor include antique-looking chandeliers and candle holders. Lamp shades might be decorated with glass or crystal beads, which will add to the antique look. Shades that are painted also work great in this décor. Remember, you are striving to find things that look as if they come from another era.

If you’re looking for a unique style that won’t break your budget, shabby chic is it. With this style, you can create a look that’s light, open, airy, relaxed, romantic, elegant AND feminine-all in one. Shabby chic gives you an original look that you can enjoy with total ease and comfort.

Turning a Tired Dated Kitchen Into a Showplace

The kitchen is the one area of your home that everyone enjoys – your family, friends and relatives all love to congregate where they feel so comfortable. For centuries, kitchens have been the heart of the home, the room where everyone gathered. Great meals, visiting at the table or playing board games brought a family together.

After all this activity it is no wonder that your kitchen may look dated. You can give it a fresh, updated appearance and increase the value of your home at the same time.

Certain Things Give Away the Age

There are some dead giveaways when it comes to the age of your kitchen. Do you still have avocado green appliances? If you do, get rid of them. If that isn’t possible due to your budget, give them a face lift! You can buy appliance paint which will allow you to change the color. Most can be used on refrigerators, dishwashers and other appliances, but always read the label before you do anything.

Maybe your cabinets look outdated. If you can afford it, buy new cabinets or have someone build them for you. Otherwise, you can completely transform the look yourself with a fresh coat of brightly colored paint and new hardware! Sand the finish down, and then pick a color that will liven up the room. Changing the look of your cabinets actually transforms the look of your entire kitchen.

Other Little Changes Create Big Impact

There are many small things you can do to change the look or style of your kitchen that cost very little. If you have windows in your kitchen area, consider changing the window treatments. Maybe you have always had curtains hanging; this might be the time to consider some modern blinds or wood shutters.

Handcraft a brightly patterned runner for your dining table. Find a used bakers rack online or at a flea market, and display all of your favorite things. If you have a very small kitchen that contains an island, you may want to remove it to open up the area and give it an spacious look.

What about the Floors?

If you have worn linoleum that has turned yellow with age, there are a few things you can do. Wood flooring is warm and charming, especially in the kitchen. You may decide that tile is a good fit with your décor. The look and design you want is really up to you. If you cannot afford new flooring, refresh the old!

You may not realize it, but linoleum floors can be painted! Sand them down, making sure to remove all dirt and dust particles, and apply an oil-based primer. Two to three layers of your chosen paint, a few layers of oil-based polyurethane to seal in protection, and you’re good to go!

Updating the look of your kitchen adds great value to your home. In fact, that is the room most potential buyers pay the most attention to. Now that you are armed with these tips, go transform your kitchen in to one that is dazzling and attracts the notice of all your visitors.

How to Decorate Your Home Lavishly on a Budget

Do you flip through all those design magazines showcasing rich, elegant interiors and dream of having enough money to create such settings in your own home? Unfortunately, not many people have the resources required to create such a lavish look. But all you need to make a room eye-catching and inviting doesn’t require much money-just your own personal touch.

Elegance without Expense
It’s a common misperception that one must spend a ton of money on new furniture, flooring, wall hangings, and so on, in order to transform the look of a room. You’ll be happy to know that it doesn’t cost tens of thousands of dollars to create a dramatic impact in your décor. With only a few hundred dollars, you can create a look that will equal any dream look you’ve seen in a home decorating magazine.

Make It Your Own
For starters, make sure you’re incorporating some of your own personality into the décor. When deciding on a décor, many people either go with the latest trends or what they think others will resonate with. Unfortunately, they typically end up with the isn’t really the look they were looking for.

Without any personal touches, the whole look is going to seem contrived. What you end up with is bland-colored walls, pictures that don’t really have any personal ties, and windows without any impact. Just because you have all that “stuff” there to make your home look exquisite, doesn’t necessarily mean that the design’s going to work.

Create a Bold, Dramatic Look
Beside incorporating your own unique personality into your décor, what other steps can you take? You can create the atmosphere you’re looking for with paint. For a bold, dramatic look, use up to 5 shades of burgundy, forest, and navy. Just be sure the color of your existing furniture will blend with the color scheme you decide on. Paint the walls, the lightest shade and the baseboards, the darkest.

You can make some rich window coverings and wall hanging yourself for almost nothing. For instance, you can use satin bed sheets to create some beautiful swag curtains. Hit the flea markets to find some unique pieces you can use for accents. Take some colors that complement your décor and have your children do some finger painting. Mat and frame their work, and voila! You have some wonderfully colorful abstract wall hangings!

Let the Energy Flow
You can also create an energetic and refreshing look in your home. Again, here you would use several shades of paint, but you want to make these colors electric. Bright greens, peach shades, and burnt orange is one color combination that’s wonderful when mixed together. A straw-colored woven rug would look great on the floor, along with simple botanical print groupings on the walls or even on a oak dresser.

Keep your furniture light, staying away from bulky or oversized furnishings. Furnishings, like a oak coffee table or a solid wood tv stand, should be light-colored and basic and design. You can use wooden shutters on the windows, or if you prefer, you can create your own curtains using a sheer material. You want to concentrate on a look that appeals to you and imagine the possibilities.

Add Some Contrast
Contrast makes things much more interesting in any décor. Although it used to not be a good idea to mix floral patterns with stripes and plaids, it’s now become the thing to do. You can really add a wow factor to your décor by mixing things up, as long as you keep it within your color boundaries.

Creating a one-of-a-kind look on a shoestring budget is completely within the realm of possibility. With a little imagination and some of your own unique personality, you can create a fabulous décor in your home.

Simple Kitchen Cabinet Decorating Tips

Kitchen cabinets are one of those things that can be expensive to replace, or sometimes you simply want to hang on to them. If you have older kitchen cabinets that you want to look a whole lot nicer, there are several ways to update them to fit the style of your kitchen décor. Here are some easy ways to update your kitchen cabinets without having to commit a lot of time or money to the project.

Add New Hardware to the Kitchen Cabinets
If you’re looking for a simple and inexpensive way to update your kitchen cabinets, install some new hardware. By adding new pulls or handles, you can really change the look of a cabinet. Cabinet hardware doesn’t cost much, and it may only take you an hour or so to complete the change. Unique handmade or hand-painted cabinet pulls will really spruce up your cabinets and add a creative touch to your kitchen décor.

Paint the Kitchen Cabinets
It’s not as difficult as you might think to paint your kitchen cabinets. Depending on the style and color of your old cabinets, it may not even be necessary to sand them before painting. To get the best coverage and make the job easier overall, be sure to remove the doors and paint them on a flat surface.

If you’re looking to completely change the look of the room, go with an entirely new color. For instance, by painting the cabinets a particular shade, you can turn a country kitchen into a modern-style décor. Since painting usually only takes a weekend, by Monday morning you can sit back and enjoy a kitchen that looks brand-new.

Take the Doors Off the Cabinets
Taking the doors off some of your cabinets is another quick way to update your kitchen. With the doors removed, you can either show off what’s inside or display a collection that adds to the kitchen décor. You don’t have to take off every cabinet door; even just two open cabinets can change the entire look of the kitchen. Before you remove the doors, however, be sure that you are committed to keeping the inside of those cabinets clean and organized, and are comfortable displaying the items inside. For example, a collection of plastic cups will not make as wonderful of a kitchen accessory as antique china.

Replace the Cabinet Doors
A great way to update your kitchen and have cabinets that fit with the style you’re going for is to replace your kitchen cabinet doors. These days, there are many different types of kitchen cabinet doors available. For instance, you can find doors that have designs built in to them. There are also doors that have windows. By finding cabinet doors that match the theme and style of the kitchen, you can help the entire décor of the room look much more cohesive. Be sure to measure your cabinets properly before selecting your doors, as this will ensure that they will fit.

Any of these ideas for updating your kitchen cabinets can help take your kitchen from old to stylish and new. While none of these renovations will cost you thousands of dollars, they can all drastically change the look of the room. Once you decide which option will work best for your cabinets and your kitchen, you can start updating your look.

How to Buy Bedding Sets for Your Bedroom

There are so many different options available when it comes to choosing your bedding. It’s important to put some time and effort into buying the best bedding set you can, as it will play a significant role in your décor. Before you buy your next bedding set, here are some things you need to remember.

Determine the Color and Style
Unless you’ve already found the perfect bedroom set randomly and you’ve decided to decorate your bedroom around that, then you’ll want to determine what color and style of bedding sets you are looking for before you go to shop. This usually depends on what colors and style you’ve chosen to decorate your bedroom with. For example, no matter how much you love that zebra-print bedding set, it won’t go with the décor if you’ve already planned a beach-themed bedroom.

Others prefer to find the bedding set first and then base their style and colors for the bedroom off that. Even then, you still want to have some sort of an idea what you want to do in the bedroom. This way you are not aimlessly shopping.

Set a Budget
The wide variety of bedding sets that are available today range from expensive to inexpensive. While you might be able to purchase a very inexpensive bedding set for 50 dollars, a luxury bedding set may cost up to 2,000 dollars. Thus, it’s important to decide how much of your decorating budget you want to spend on your bedding set.

If your project includes decorating the whole bedroom, you need to be sure to set money aside for other items you might need. Also, not all bedding sets include all the same pieces. For some, you might have to buy extra sheets and pillows as well.

Know the Size of the Bed
You should know what size bed you have and even take the measurements of the mattress before you even start looking at bedding. Know the correct size the first time around. That way you won’t end up going back to the store and returning items. When you go to measure the mattress, just be sure to measure its length, depth, and width, especially if your mattress is a pillow top.

Research Bedding Materials
Different bedding sets are made of one of several different materials. The type of material you choose will determine the price, so you’ll need to decide on a material that’s going to fit in your budget. You need to also consider the thread count when you’re looking at sheets. Luxurious sheets tend to have a higher thread count and also be more expensive.

Cotton tends to be the most popular bedding material. There are a few different types of cotton you can choose from. One of the more expensive cottons is the very luxurious Egyptian cotton. For bedding, the most common material is standard cotton, which is also the least expensive. Other materials you might choose from include silk, flannel, and chenille.

The bedding set you choose can easily add to or take away from the décor of your bedroom. Be sure to plan accordingly when purchasing a bedding set for your bedroom so you don’t end up with bedding that’s a mistake.
