How to Make Your Bedroom Appear Larger

It happens all too often, you find the perfect home – you love everything about it, but the master bedroom is too small. You find the perfect home; everything about it is exactly what you wanted, until you get to the master bedroom. This happens more than you could imagine. The rest of the home is exactly what you have been searching for, even though the master bedroom is a bit small. The living room and kitchen are completely satisfying. What can be done to make the master bedroom look and feel more spacious? How do you make the master bedroom look and feel more open? Your room will visually enlarge with the tips and ideas in this article. All small rooms can be improved by most of these tips.

You can easily accomplish the appearance of space. You don’t need to sacrifice personality and style when making your room look open, all that is necessary are a few small changes. Here are a few ideas that will help you create larger looking spaces that can be used not only in your master bedroom, but in many other parts of your home as well.

Use Mirrors!
You have probably heard of this trick millions of times before, but it works. On your bedroom wall, just opposite of a window, you should hang a mirror. The reflection of the window will make the room appear sun filled and spacious, especially with the use of light curtains. This can also be applied to one of your bathrooms, or your living room.

Paint – The Solution for Many Problems
Paint can do many things for your home. Small bedrooms should have light colored walls. Cream, off-white and soft pastel shades of peach and yellow are great colors to use in a small room. Painting the ceiling of a room white will give the room a lighter look. Light shades will open up an area, while dark hues tend to diminish.

Floors Should Be Light as Well
Adding visual space to small rooms can also be accomplished by keeping floors lightly colored. If you are more inclined towards using carpet, using carpet with light hues such as sand and cream also works. Natural woods and light colors should be used on wood floors. You can always add light colored rugs to the sides and foot of the bed in case you have a dark colored carpet and cannot afford replacing it.

A headboard typically appears to be bulky. This problem can be solved by hanging a large tapestry or rug on the wall behind the bed and taking out the headboard. The room will have a more open, and spacious, feel by doing this. Consider swing arm lamps on your walls, instead of a lamp on you night table, in order to open up the area on top of your night stand.

This is a neat trick that will help to open up your master bedroom: Hang sheer, light colored curtains that are higher and wider than your windows! With this, the room will appear more open and airy because the illusion of larger windows will add a new dimension to the room. Moving a chest or dresser into a closet to further open up the floor space should be considered if you have the extra space.

Comforters, curtains and throw pillows should also have light tones in order to add to the room. Remember, using dark colors recedes and diminishes the area; these colors absorb light, this is not what you want! Things should be kept as light and as open as possible in your master bedroom; this will keep things looking large and spacious.

How to Buy Bedding Sets for Your Bedroom

There are so many different options available when it comes to choosing your bedding. It’s important to put some time and effort into buying the best bedding set you can, as it will play a significant role in your décor. Before you buy your next bedding set, here are some things you need to remember.

Determine the Color and Style
Unless you’ve already found the perfect bedroom set randomly and you’ve decided to decorate your bedroom around that, then you’ll want to determine what color and style of bedding sets you are looking for before you go to shop. This usually depends on what colors and style you’ve chosen to decorate your bedroom with. For example, no matter how much you love that zebra-print bedding set, it won’t go with the décor if you’ve already planned a beach-themed bedroom.

Others prefer to find the bedding set first and then base their style and colors for the bedroom off that. Even then, you still want to have some sort of an idea what you want to do in the bedroom. This way you are not aimlessly shopping.

Set a Budget
The wide variety of bedding sets that are available today range from expensive to inexpensive. While you might be able to purchase a very inexpensive bedding set for 50 dollars, a luxury bedding set may cost up to 2,000 dollars. Thus, it’s important to decide how much of your decorating budget you want to spend on your bedding set.

If your project includes decorating the whole bedroom, you need to be sure to set money aside for other items you might need. Also, not all bedding sets include all the same pieces. For some, you might have to buy extra sheets and pillows as well.

Know the Size of the Bed
You should know what size bed you have and even take the measurements of the mattress before you even start looking at bedding. Know the correct size the first time around. That way you won’t end up going back to the store and returning items. When you go to measure the mattress, just be sure to measure its length, depth, and width, especially if your mattress is a pillow top.

Research Bedding Materials
Different bedding sets are made of one of several different materials. The type of material you choose will determine the price, so you’ll need to decide on a material that’s going to fit in your budget. You need to also consider the thread count when you’re looking at sheets. Luxurious sheets tend to have a higher thread count and also be more expensive.

Cotton tends to be the most popular bedding material. There are a few different types of cotton you can choose from. One of the more expensive cottons is the very luxurious Egyptian cotton. For bedding, the most common material is standard cotton, which is also the least expensive. Other materials you might choose from include silk, flannel, and chenille.

The bedding set you choose can easily add to or take away from the décor of your bedroom. Be sure to plan accordingly when purchasing a bedding set for your bedroom so you don’t end up with bedding that’s a mistake.

Inexpensive Bedroom Makeovers

A totally new look for your bedroom doesn’t A little creativity can go a long way, whether it’s an afternoon project or just adding a few accessories. This is what you’ll need to get start: Pillows, pillows, pillows. Get a few of them, the $10 kind, in whole new color palette. Creating a monochromatic look is as simple as getting several pillows in the same color but using different textures like silk or chenille. Try a romantic look with layers of pillows — large ones in the back and smaller ones up front.

A fresh coat of paint can make a huge difference in the look of room and its fairly inexpensive to do. Remember, you don’t have to repaint your entire room; you can focus on a particular area that needs renovating. Older closet doors, the ones that usually have more detail can easily be improved and given texture by painting the frame in natural color and the inset in a darker color. A little creative paining of your furniture can make your entire room come to life. Try sponge-painting a chest or giving a cabinet a faux antique finish.

A brand new headboard can be costly. Try creative, inexpensive ideas such as using a section of a wrought iron or picket fence bought at a flea market. Want something that’s inexpensive and will make your bed look soft and sophisticated? Then try decorating with bed skirts. They can be found in a plethora of colors, textures and patterns. By using a soft and neutral color you can get the most in both beauty and versatility. You do not want it to be the center of attention, but you do want it to accent your bed.

Window treatments are simpler than people think. A swag at the top of the window is inexpensive (depending on your fabric choice) and not too dramatic. It will really add a feminine touch to the room. You can use plant or bicycle hooks hanging from the ceiling. Or opt for just a blind and an inexpensive garland or floral accent at the top of the window. We also adore the simple look of pre-made drapes and a basic rod with funky finials. Pottery Barn, JCPenny, Target and Bed Bath and Beyond offer a wide selection of all these items.

Do have a canopy or four-poster bed that could use a little sprucing up? Create a beautiful “puddle” or “pond” affect by draping fabric over the poles and letting it fall to the floor. To create this effect, just add an extra 20 inches to the fabric before it is cut. Candles are a perfect decorative item that many people tend to forget. While most people go with white candles, since they’re the most sophisticated, consider clustering colored candles to create a focal point on a night stand or dresser. Group candles in odd numbers — even amounts tend to be boring. Try different heights and gather them as an altar on a shelf.

Hanging framed artwork and posters or mirrors is inexpensive and can go a long way in changing the look of room, but make sure it doesn’t clash with your current décor. Stick with neutral-colored frames — gold, silver, white, black or wood tone. Wall shelves are perfect for a quick decorating touch. Collections are perfect for displaying on a wall shelf, but try to stay away from small items. Placing a lot of tiny accessories will leave the shelf looking cramped and cluttered. You can place a framed painting or pictures on the shelf or even try something minimalist like fresh flowers in simple glass bottles.
