7 Popcorn Ceiling Removal Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Contractor

Popcorn ceiling removal is very common these days. So is getting ripped off and scammed by your contractor. There are many good contractors doing great work, but there are also many scam artists and fly by night companies who are only looking to rip you off. Since real estate values across the nation have been depressed, many homeowners are choosing to update their existing home by easy and inexpensive interior renovations like popcorn removal.

Home owners need to ask their popcorn ceiling removal contractor these 7 questions before they hire them for the job. Removing popcorn ceilings is very common these days as many home owners are updating their existing homes. Popcorn ceilings are outdated and many home owners prefer knockdown texture over popcorn. Knockdown texture just looks better and there is a great return on investment because popcorn removal is an affordable improvement which may add incremental value to the home. Before hiring a contractor in the Orlando area, be sure to ask these 7 questions to avoid getting ripped and scammed.

Popcorn Ceiling Removal Question #1 – “Do I need to worry about testing for lead in my house?”

If your home was built before 1978, then the answer is “yes”. If your home was built after 1978, the answer is “no”. According to EPA.gov, “Common renovation activities like sanding, cutting, and demolition can create hazardous lead dust and chips by disturbing lead-based paint, which can be harmful to adults and children.

To protect against this risk, on April 22, 2008, EPA issued a rule requiring the use of lead-safe practices and other actions aimed at preventing lead poisoning. Under the rule, beginning April 22, 2010, contractors performing renovation, repair and painting projects that disturb lead-based paint in homes, child care facilities, and schools built before 1978 must be certified and must follow specific work practices to prevent lead contamination.

EPA requires that firms performing renovation, repair, and painting projects that disturb lead-based paint in pre-1978 homes, child care facilities and schools be certified by EPA and that they use certified renovators who are trained by EPA-approved training providers to follow lead-safe work practices.” It is important to use Lead Safe Certified contractors for popcorn removal projects.

Popcorn Ceiling Removal Question #2 – “Can I remove my popcorn ceiling by myself and save some money?”

The short answer is “yes”. However, saving a few bucks may turn out to be a major headache in the long run for a few reasons. The first reason is the work will be difficult. You will need special equipment, respirators, eye protection and so on. In most cases, homeowners simply lack the expertise to do the job correctly and it can become very time consuming. Another reason is the work may cause damage to other areas in the house, the furniture, the walls and the floors. It becomes even more difficult if your popcorn ceilings have been painted.

Popcorn Ceiling Removal Question #3 – “Is it more difficult to remove popcorn ceilings which have been painted?”

Removing painted popcorn is more difficult because it is a challenge to penetrate the paint with water to thoroughly wet the material prior to the disturbance. This is another situation where the expertise of a professional contractor can be a major benefit.

Popcorn Ceiling Removal Question #4 – “Will my house be a complete mess after the popcorn ceiling is removed?”

Removing popcorn is inherently a “messy” job if you do it yourself or have a contractor do the job for you. This is why it is important for you to “cover off” the entire area of the work to be done. You will need to cover all vents with plastic, cover all fixtures with plastic and tape, cover all carpets and floors with plastic, and close off any areas you do not want affected by the job. In essence, you need to create a “containment area” for the job. Professional popcorn ceiling removal contractors will leave your house spot less and looking better than when they started.

Popcorn Ceiling Removal Question #5 – “Will I have to move all of my furniture out of the house?”

The answer is “no”. Experts in popcorn removal, residential painting, ceiling repair, and drywall repair are specialists in protecting your belongings. The will “cover off” all of your furniture, TV’s, beds, etc. and protect them from any dust or damage. Most companies will want the homeowner to remove all of their “nick nacks”, pictures, small electronics, etc. before beginning work on the home.

Popcorn Ceiling Removal Question #6 – “How long does it take to remove popcorn ceilings”

As you can imagine, every house is different. It all depends on the size and scope of the work, the condition of the house, the height of the ceilings, and whether or not the rooms where the work is to be done are empty or furnished. Remember, once you have removed the popcorn, you still have to apply knockdown texture and paint it. If you are doing the work yourself, you should plan on a being at it for a few days at the least. Professional popcorn ceiling removal contractors, like Textures by Blue Sky, Inc., can typically complete a 3500 sq. ft. house in one day. Just make sure you choose the right one to work with.

Popcorn Ceiling Removal Question #7 – “How do I know the popcorn ceiling removal contractor I have hired is going to do a good job?”

Do some research. Ask your friends and family if they know a reputable company in the Orlando area. Make sure you use a company that has been in business for at least a few years. It is also important to use a company that is licensed, bonded, and insured. Really Cool Paints

The roof is that particular part of every home or other commercial structure which is always subjected to the heat of the sun and other natural elements. Various materials can be used to construct the roof as well as many designs to make them. Nowadays when green living is promoted almost everywhere, many home and building owners choose to have green roofs or roofs with foliages and small plant forms. However if your roof is not flat, you would not be able to have a green roof but this does not mean you no longer have a choice. For other roof styles other than flat, there are heat reflective paints which help you live in a sustainable manner.

Heat reflective paint, as the name suggests reflects heat. It can be applied to virtually any type of roof. One of the primary benefits provided by this roof covering is that it helps cool down the home or the structure the paint is applied on. The roof temperature in fact would have a reduced amount of up to 40° when the day is extremely very hot. Inside the home, the temperature will become cooler for up to 15°. When there is no or less amount of heat entering the building, the indoor temperature is considerably lowered and thus cooled down even without any air conditioning. Since the use of air conditioning is lessened, energy expenses is also effectively reduced. Not only in Summer do this reflective roof coating can be of great use, but even during chilly winter days, its insulation ability is also known to be of use.

There is yet another advantage when you require roof painters to apply heat reflective materials to your roof. Since such kind of roof coating can help the temperature of the roof in constant amount, the occurrence of the condition known as Thermal Shock is lessened. Thermal Shock is the incident when the material expands and contracts excessively that the roof together with the coating gets worn easily.

If you are looking for a cost effective way to insulate your home, factory or business premises then such material will truly be the most perfect solution. This kind of painting material contains very small particles of glass which is said to be able to reflect up to 90% of the light which the sun shines on the roof. The consistency of the paint is not affected by the presence of the glass specks. So in effect, the small glass particles are responsible in warding off ultraviolet and infrared rays of the sun which contributes to the heat accumulated inside a structure. These harmful rays of the sun do not only create heat but they also have other unwanted effects on things such as fading of colors in fabrics. This is why not only homes can benefit from using heat reflective materials for the roof but also commercial establishments who wish to safeguard their properties from such circumstances. Thus in applying this coating on the roof, you provide your home with insulation and at the same time you also refurbish the roof for a price of one.

Heat reflective paint is a fairly new technology but not necessarily very new. It has been around for more or less 28 years and is incorporated in home and building design. They are available in many colors so you can paint the roof in your favorite shade.

Using a Monochromatic Color Scheme in Your Home

Some might find the monochromatic look dull and boring. There is a certain stunning effect that can come with a monochromatic theme if you use it right. This style of decorating might seem bland and lifeless to some and if you’re one of them, the tips and ideas in this article will help you create a room with depth and appeal. This popular style of decorating doesn’t just favor white and beige.

You can create rooms full of personality and interest by using any colors that you want. Try to use reds, purple or emerald greens in rooms that you don’t plan on spending too much time in, as they can be overwhelming.

The Secret Lies in the Colors

Going with the monochromatic look means that you’ll need to use three different shades of the same color. For example, great choices for someone going with brown tones would be light beige, deep amber, peach, terracotta and chocolate brown. One of the colors, preferably the medium tone, needs to dominate. As an example, paint the walls beige, then you should get a sofa and love seat with amber tones and baseboards should be accented with chocolate brown. The dominant color of the room should be amber.

Choosing Patterns and Adding Texture

The depth and interest that is in a monochromatic theme comes from the patterns and texture used in the room. As long as your strongest colors in patterns and stripes are from your three chosen tones, they will be perfect in this style. Take combinations of silky and nubby fabrics for the most appeal. Consider using nubby textured accent rugs along with silky curtains. Tapestries are another great way to add texture.

If you want to add further appeal think about painting a bold stripe of color around the room. Take a beige wall for example, now you could leave it as is or you could give it an 18” wide chocolate brown stripe around the whole room. This will visually extend the room and bring life to the walls a bit.

Accessories Add a Punch of Color

While the furniture and larger details of the room need to be in the three chosen colors, you can add vibrant punches of color with pictures and other small accents. A bright splash of red or yellow in a picture can go really well in a beige, amber and chocolate theme. A floral arrangement with these color or bowl filled with bananas and red apples in the center of a table would work just as well. Large pillar or square shaped candles can help you add more small accents to the room, just as long as you make sure they stay in these shades.

The three basic colors are a must for the larger details; however, you may add bursts of color with the smaller details. You will be able to create rooms and spaces that are beautiful, unique and appealing to all who enter if you decide to use a single dominant color.

Protective Coatings – Nano-Science at Its Best

The usability and applicability of nanotechnology is wide-ranging. The principle of nanotechnology that allows man to manipulate the molecular structure of materials has also made it possible for new innovations to flourish. Today, nanotechnology has grown to such an extent that about a thousand products are being developed or manufactured in laboratories all around the world using the technology. Passive nano-materials are already available for the cosmetics and food industry. Carbon allotropes nano-materials are also being used for textile, food packaging, appliances and many other manufacturing sectors.

The building industry has also adopted the use of nano-materials for surface and protective coatings products, using what is called “surface functionalized nano-materials.” Nano-particles like dodecanethiol functionalized gold particles have unique surface chemistries that can be controlled. Their adhesion properties can be changed. Nano-powders can be dispersed to polymers and protective coatings. When these nano-materials are combined with coatings and applied to target surfaces, they change the surface properties and make it more resistant to UV rays, typical corrosion, and many types of damages.

Nanotechnology Innovation: Protective Super-Paints

The coatings industry is stepping up the production of nanotechnology products. Just last year, an Italian paint manufacturer developed superpolymers and protective coatings based on a patented nanotechnology. The results are anti-corrosive fire-resistant super-paints based on nano-clay composites. Nano-clay is a material that has outstanding barrier properties and is very cost-efficient in its application. The anti-corrosive coatings will soon be in the market this 2010.

Many other anti-corrosion formulations based on nano-materials are also used in the construction and underwater industries. Heavy machinery painting applications often require the best performance in protective coatings. In the oil extraction and energy generation industries, nano-tech protective coatings that are resistant to fluctuating and extreme temperatures are also being used.

Excellent Surface Protection with Nanotechnology

In terms of surface protection, nanotechnology is often used to formulate nano-scale coatings that make the target surfaces high-performing and resistant to damages.

The Diamon Fusion® nanotechnology is one good example of this technological advancement. Theirs is a patented technology to manufacture capped silicone films. Using a patented chemical vapor deposition process, the technique is employed to silicon-dioxide-based surfaces. These coatings are also effective on glass, ceramic, granite or porcelain surfaces. The technology involves a two-stage chemical process. The first stage creates cross-linked films in silica-treated surfaces. The second stage caps the surface. The coatings thereby increase the surface’ ability to repel water intrusion. Aside from this unique waterproofing property, the protective coatings can also provide the surface with good resistance against surface contaminants. In essence, the protective coatings imbue the surface with easy self-cleaning abilities.

Diamon Fusion® coatings are applied in an air-tight room using a vapor deposition system for high-volume and batch applications. It can also be hand-applied as a liquid product to smaller projects. Whatever method of application was used, the coatings act in the same way. They create cross-linked and branched, capped silicone films in the surface. The final film is clear-colored and seals the surface tightly. The bond formed by the chemical process is unbreakable from then on.

Tips on Painting Windows

Home improvement is not a static task. This is ongoing job that is always required or it may be said that home improvement never stops. You always need some home improvement that may be related to the windows, paints, interior decoration or anything else. However, here in this article I am briefly explaining some ideas that will be helpful in painting Aluminum Window Frames. If you have some aluminum window frames in your home and you want to refresh their color or you wish to change the overall color of these frames then you should consider and follow some essential steps. Here I am describing these steps one by one. These steps are broken in two broad categories, preparation and application of painting window frames. It is very important to follow all these steps if you want durability and fine look of your finished product.

First of all the amount that you may need for preparation always depends on condition and type of original substrate. For example if you want to paint some old coated windows then this will be little difficult and you will need more preparation. On the other hand if the windows are newly coated then it would just require paint for color change. You will not need to rub off extra chalking before painting the frame of windows. Moreover, anodized aluminum windows require more and more preparation than many other substrates. Whenever you start painting some isolated sections then it is very important that you should protect adjoining finished surfaces. Furthermore, when you start painting aluminum windows in your apartment or home then you should put plastic sheets down to protect the windows. This is very important for the protection of glass.

2 Things to Consider When Planning an Exterior Home Painting

Naturally, if you are not an expert at something it is in your best interest to seek out helpful tips before you actually execute whatever it is you are attempting to do. When you are dealing with something as vulnerable and sensitive as painting a house, it would be very wise of you to do your research before hand so that you do not have to experience a tragic ending to what could have been a happy bragging right.

This is especially true when you are planning an exterior home painting excursion. It is for this exact reason that I have constructed this list of things to consider when planning for an event such as exterior house painting.

Let us begin.

Is The Weather Outside Frightful?

I bet you never thought of this, did you? Well, if this is true for you, do not feel bad. This is the last thing that most people are thinking about when they are planning to paint their home. When you have a project that has a million aspects to it, weather is not a top priority.

Or is it?

Well, considering the weather is actually much more important than you would imagine and here’s why:

• If it rains while you are in the process of painting your home, the paint has a very low chance of sticking and drying properly.
• If you are in an area that suffers from below freezing temperatures then normal paint will not dry properly. It will actually freeze and ruin the whole process.
• If you do live in an area that has below freezing temperatures, then you will need to special order paint that is specifically designed to sustain this type of extreme condition.

So, as you can plainly see when planning an exterior home painting, you will need to be very cautious and aware of what the weather conditions will be like during your designated house painting time frame.

My Home is Transparent!

Have you ever seen a home that appears to be transparent? No, I do not mean you can see through the house! I mean that you can see through the newest coat of paint and see what the previous color of the house was?

Well, this is a much more common error than one would like to see.

So, why does this happen?

The answer to this question has 2 very simple answers.

1. Low Quality Product

The most prevalent cause is that whoever is doing the painting used low grade paint. When you use low grade paint, it does not have the consistency and “thickness”, if you will, to fully cover the previous paint color. Exterior home painting should always be done with quality paint.

The lesson here?

DON’T BE CHEAP! It costs too much to be cheap.

2. Not Enough Coats

The 2nd reason for this “transparency” issue is that the person or persons that painted the home did not apply enough coats of paint to the home. This is a very simple error that can easily be amended; however, it can be quite a hassle to do this after you thought you had a complete paint job.

So, there you have it! These are just a couple of things to consider before part executing an exterior home painting.

If you take these 2 simple things into consideration, you will be a happy camper; however, should you disregard them, you will be a very disgruntled camper with a lot of unnecessary work ahead of you.
