Feng Shui Your Bedroom

Your bedroom has an effect on the way you sleep, and this is a very important factor in staying healthy, happy and accumulating wealth. There isn’t just one element to consider when planning your life with abundance; you need to take everything into account, including the way you revitalize yourself. Your bed should be comfortable, and the energy should flow smoothly throughout the room. You should not have anything under the bed, so that energy can circulate properly.

The bedroom should be painted a soft color that suits your energy so you will rest peacefully. A bedroom should never be painted red. Red is an energizing color and you will not get the proper rest if you sleep in a red room. Fresh air should always be circulating through your bedroom and also through the rest of the house. If you live in an apartment building as I do, and do not have much circulation flowing throughout, get a small floor Vornado fan and place it near a window. I recommend

the Vornado fan because it is the only one I have found that is quiet and doesn’t blow too hard. It is the quietest fan I have found on the market. Most fans, even on the lowest speed, tend to move too fast. Ceiling fans turned low are also a good way to circulate energy. Ceiling fans should not be placed directly over your bed. Your bedroom should never have a mirror that faces the bed, as it interferes with restful sleep. Mirrors should not be placed behind your bed, at your feet or by the side of the bed. It is an old Chinese belief that your spirit leaves the body and rises as you begin to sleep, but becomes frightened when it sees itself in a mirror. It then rushes back inside the body with the result that you never get a good night’s sleep.

The Chinese also believe that a white coverlet is unhealthy because it is the color of the shroud that covers the dead. It is also considered unhealthy for your feet to face the door, because that is how they remove dead bodies from a room. There is a saying in Feng Shui that when you sleep with your feet facing the door you will never stay at home. You will find that you will want to be on the go all the time and never feel relaxed when you are home. You will be on the go constantly. Ceiling beams in a bedroom are quite unhealthy as they disturb the flow of ch’i. They should be avoided in all the rooms but especially the bedroom. Have them covered if they are open. They block the flow for energy to circulate. They also cause financial problems. Wall beams in corners of the room have the same effect. Green plants placed by the side of the wall beams help deflect some of the negative energy, as will a wind chime hung from the ceiling in front of the beam.

Your bed is one of the most important things you have and should be replaced every time you move. It should also be replaced under the following conditions for the fresh energy a new mattress brings:

If you have had your bed for a long period of time, perhaps five years or more, you should replace it.

If you have a bed where other people slept before you.

If you or your partner have been seriously ill, your bed should be replaced with a new one.

Decorating Ideas for a Dining Room

Many people believe that you have to spend a lot of money on a dining room in order to make it look good. This is absolutely not the case, as there are plenty of inexpensive ways to create a stylish and put-together dining room. Here are some tips on how to decorate your dining room inexpensively to help get you started.

Decorate with Your China
Do you have a beautiful set of china stored away? Why not bring it out and put it on display for all to see? If you want to decorate using something you already own, then this is a great option. Display your china in an armoire or china cabinet, or place it on a shelf on the wall.

If you no longer use the set, then you can use wall hangers to hang the plates on the wall in a decorative pattern. You might also use your china settings to set your oak dining table in order to give it more of a finished look.

Make the Window Treatments
You don’t necessarily have to be a seamstress in order to make your own inexpensive window treatments. By simply taking a long silk scarf and draping it over a curtain rod, you can quickly add a stylish touch to otherwise boring blinds or drapes. Another option is to use placemats and tablecloths for your window treatments so that they match the same design that’s on your table.

Use Nature to Decorate the Dining Room
As the seasons turn, you may be able to find some décor items for your dining room right in your own backyard. Try filling up a large wicker basket with all sorts of natural items such as flowers, stones, leaves, fruits, and twigs. Once you’ve arrange the items to your liking, you can place the basket on the dining room table as a seasonal centerpiece. By creating a seasonal basket, you can change up the look of your dining room or oak dining room sets with each season and stay well within your budget.

Make Your Own Artwork
Creating your own artwork is a wonderful way to save money on decorating the dining room. After all, artwork tends to be the most expensive décor item for any room of the house. When you create your own art pieces, you can really save a substantial amount of money.

Even if you’re not very creative of can’t draw or paint, you can still create some sort of art piece to hang on your wall. Find some fabric that matches your dining room’s style. You’ll also need to purchase a few inexpensive plain photo frames or blank canvases. Stretch the fabric tightly over the frame or canvas and then staple it in place to the back. Then, voila! You now have a decorative fabric piece to hang on the wall. Make a couple of these in different sizes and with various fabric patterns, and hang them in a collage for a great backdrop for the dining room.

Decorating your dining room doesn’t necessarily require a large budget. By recycling things you already have around your home, you can create new décor items for the room. Even if you don’t spend a dime on your dining room’s décor, by getting creative and using your sense of style to come up with unique decorating ideas, you’ll end up with a room that not only looks expensive but reflects your personality.

Door Push Plates – They Keep Doors Strong

Your front door is the entrance to your home or office, it is the first thing that your guests will see; you may have spent hours picking the perfect front door to compliment the entrance to your home or office.

Consider installing door push plates on your front door to help prevent wear and tear on your door. You have several different options to consider when picking out and installing them.

Style

A visit to any home improvement store will reveal just how many varieties there are to choose from when you are selecting door push plates. You will be able to find any color and style to match. From modern contemporary ones to antique-style options with delicate designs, you really are not limited to any ones style at all.

Materials

In addition to a wide variety of styles to choose from, there are several different materials to choose from when selecting your door push plates. Before making your selection you should be sure to think about the amount of use they are going to get. For example, a plastic one on the door to a busy doctor’s office is not a very practical choice. This selection is going to get dirty very fast, and also runs the risk of cracking from the continual pushing. For doors with high-usage consider installing something crafted from brass.

Installation

Installation of door push plates is an easy project that you can undertake on your own. There are two main types to choose from; screw-on and self-adhesive. With the self-adhesive type installation is as simple as lining up where you want your push plate to fit onto your door, marking the lines with a pencil, removing the adhesive backing, and pressing it into the marked area.

A screw-on option is generally has four screws to hold it to the door. You can align it on the door where you want it and use a pencil to mark where the screws will fit. Using a cordless screw driver you can then affix the it onto your door.

Be sure to follow all instructions provided to you by the manufacturer of the door push plates.

Maintenance & Cleaning

Depending on the usage level of your door push plates, often a good window cleaner will be satisfactory in keeping them clean. However if your door has heavy use, or is in a doctors office you might want to consider using a mild disinfectant to clean it weekly. Before using harsh chemicals on it, check the manufacturer guidelines for keeping it clean. You might not necessarily want to clean a brass one with a bleach mixture; you run the risk of damaging it.

Installation of door push plates is a great way to help prevent wear and tear on a door that gets heavy usage. An inexpensive and easy project, it will help add years of life to the finish on your door.

Glass Doorknobs – They’re a Great Decorative Finishing Touch

You have decided that you really want to improve the look of your home and have taken on some big time remodeling projects to make it happen. Well, now it is time to put the finishing touches in place and a great way to do just that is with glass doorknobs. They are a great decorative finishing touch that will have your home looking better than ever.

What’s so special about glass doorknobs? Well, it is because they are so pleasing to the eye which is the result of a couple of different things with the first being how they are designed. For instance, you can get one that has a spiraling shape with delicate rounded edges. Or, you can get one that is in the shape of a rosette with rigid edges. There are even ones that are in the shape of a sleek round ball with no edges at all and some that are unique shapes like ovals.

In addition to what type of design and shape that glass doorknobs have, what also adds to its look is the different colors they can have and the materials they can be mounted on. For instance, you can get one in a lovely rosette shape that is a beautiful shade of red that is mounted on a brass polished back plate, creating one eye-catching traditional selection. Or, you could get one that is that lovely round shape that is clear in color but features a mirrored center while being mounted on a sleek steel chrome finished back plate.

These are just a few of the many color and material options that glass doorknobs can have and be mounted on. Some other color choices out there include lavender, pink, blue, and emerald while some of the other materials they can be mounted on include other metals like bronze and aluminum along with ceramic and even porcelain.

When purchasing glass doorknobs, or any doorknobs for that matter, remember to get the right ones for the job. Like, if you are getting one for the bathroom, make sure to get a privacy one that has a lock on it. Or, if you are getting one for a closest, just get one that opens and shut without a lock. There are also dummy ones that have the look of one, yet don’t twist or anything, and some that are designed for entryway doors that have a keyed cylinder for locking and shutting. Those of the glass variety should not be used on outside doors because they could easily break from the elements.

To find the right glass doorknobs for your space, just hit the Internet for some online shopping. It is a fast way to check out the many choices because you don’t even have to leave your home to do it, plus, when you do happen upon something, it generally will be at the best prices around.

In the end, if you really want to cap off the look of your newly remodeled space, just turn to elegant glass doorknobs to do it.

Doorknobs – Elegance Shines Through Porcelain and Glass

What small item of decoration costs little to buy is quick to fix and immediately enhances the status of your dwelling place? We’re talking about porcelain and glass door knobs. For adding style and elegance in minutes, they are just the job. Measuring two and a quarter or two and a half inches, these doorknobs often come equipped with back-plates and for the models designed for entrances, they are supplied complete with locks and latches.

Porcelain as a material lends itself to numerous different effects. Door knobs made out of porcelain can be colored white, brown or black, but also ivory and almond. The difference in color can be changed or adjusted according to the dye that is introduced into the raw porcelain mix before it is fired in a pottery oven and glazed for a shiny finish. It is also possible to paint this material in different colors and to use special embossing effects.

Doorknob back-plates can be found in porcelain as well, but also in brass (polished light or dark), metal with a brushed satin effect, chrome and pewter. Pewter is an interesting metal for back-plates for door knobs because it lends itself to many different effects, including an antique look from centuries ago to a shiny metallic glow akin to that of silver or gold. These effects are particularly effective with glass door knobs that can reflect light in different colors on the back-plate behind.

Although the use of porcelain and glass dates back to times long ago, doorknobs made of these materials can also be modern or contemporary in appearance, as well as traditional. Modern manufacturing techniques allow door knobs to be produced with original geometric designs that preserve the ergonomics of previous generations, whilst bringing a “fashion” aspect into your house.

Whatever you can do with glass for other artifacts, you can do with glass for doorknobs as well. Cut glass and mirror finishes are available as well as tinted glass versions. They are also made in different shapes including oval, round, square and geometrical. Toughened glass models are also available, which is an important consideration if you are thinking of using them in environments where wear and tear is increased.

Not every environment lends itself to the use of porcelain or glass door knobs. Doors with external facing or areas with heavy use of entrances and exits are not good candidates for glass and porcelain doorknobs. Their focus is more on good looks rather than industrial strength and robustness. For this reason, children’s rooms are probably better equipped with standard door knobs to start off with.

Cleaning and maintenance of your glass or porcelain doorknob is relatively simple. Regular dusting of doorknobs that are not used so frequently is important to prevent the build-up of dirt and grime that may be more difficult to remove afterwards. Warm, soapy water on a cloth can also be used. Chemical cleaners and abrasive materials should be avoided wherever possible, as they may well permanently damage the surface of the glass or the porcelain.

The Benefits Of Surround Sound Speakers

When surround sound speakers came out, I swore to myself that I would never get them. I snorted at the very idea! You see, I was a fan of low fidelity rock music, and I was quite proud of it. I did not need any of that fancy nonsense – you just needed to hear the song. Any music that needed a surround sound speaker system to be truly appreciated was probably lousy music. Straightforward rock ‘n roll, which I knew was the best music in the world, certainly did not need that kind of technology. It could be appreciated in its raw and unadulterated form. It even sounded good through a blown speaker cabinet.

My wife, however, has very different opinions about music. She has very different opinions about everything, in fact, but fortunately both of us like to argue. She knew that she needed home theater surround sound speakers. For her, my music was just plain noise. It had no subtlety in her opinion, unlike the classical music that she treasured.

This is why I first listened to speakers surround sound, but I am glad that I did. I was surprised at how much difference they really made. They really brought out the music at its full depth. Even simple, straightforward, dirty rock ‘n roll sounded great through surround sound speakers. We had some of the best surround sound speakers that were on the market at the time, which was pretty impressive for us. Before that, you see, all I had were some big, old, half dead speakers from the mid-70s. Her stereo equipment consisted of a dual tape deck boombox from the mid-80s. The difference between that and the surround sound speakers was like night and day!

It was easy for us to pick out surround sound speakers. My wife had some friends who were big audiophiles, you see, and they played their Boise surround sound system to us. If you have never had the chance to listen to a surround sound home theater system, however, you probably should not go out and buy speakers. It is important to get a chance to listen to it in a room of similar size and layout to the one that you are going to put it in. Surround sound speakers vary based on their surroundings. The same surround sound speakers that will sound great in one environmental will sound terrible in another, so you have to be sure to research it thoroughly.

How Audio Books Changed My Life

I have always been a book lover.

I love books and have been reading since I was a little baby. My mom made sure she instilled the love of books in me. Unlike my other friends throughout school who always had problems reading, I never had such problems.

Reading was fun to me. It was something I would do, not because I had to get good grades in school, but because I just loved to. On average I would read nine books a week. The local library was such a treasury of unread books that it became my favourite place to hang out

Like you would expect, I carried this love for books into my adulthood.

When the kids came along I wanted to instill the same love of books into my kids too.

I used to make it a habit to read to my kids EVERY night before they go to bed, no matter how exhausted I was when I got home from work.

I didn’t expect it to, but because I work long hours at my job, I always get very tired while reading to my kids at night. In many occasions I have even fallen asleep before my kids right whilst I’m reading to them!

Deep within me I could see that there just wasn’t any way I could keep up with the habit of always reading to my kids each night… unless I found another job that would take up less of my time (but still pay me good wage at the same time – impossible to find such a job, right?)

At that same time that I was thinking of that, I was promoted in my job. This involved arriving at work one hour earlier, and – one hour AFTER everyone else had left the office.

I felt devastated , that meant I lost the one hour I treasured every morning reading a chapter of a motivational or inspirational book to start off my day in a positive and motivated frame of mind. On top of that I lost the one hour I invested reading to my kids after work.

I was in a dilemma wondering what I should do. My husband suggested I ought to give up reading to my kids at nights, and he would do it instead. He was under as much time pressure as I was.

I was still trying to work out a solution when I discovered AUDIO BOOKS!

Eureka… the savior had arrived.

Six weeks after my first contact with audio books, my predicament has ended.

Not only have I gained back my 2 hours taken by my job, I have added many more hours to my life because of audio books.

How?

First, I now get a 2 hour value of books every morning before I get to work.

During the 1 hour it generally takes me to get ready for work, I listen to an audio book.

During the 1 hour or so it takes me to commute to and from work, I listen to an audio book.

During the 1 hour or so I spend to have lunch and break times, I listen to an audio book.

Total time gained with audio books is 3 incredibly educative hours in the mornings and afternoons.

Now my job doesn’t have to take all of my time away from getting the value I get reading books.

Secondly, instead of spending the 1 hour reading to my kids each night when I get home tired, I play an audio book for them instead. Somehow I discovered that they seem to prefer the audio books to my reading.

I think I heard my daughter mumbling about how the voice from the audio book is “more awake than mom’s”.

Now… aren’t audio books wonderful?

If you have had similar problems to me, you can gain back your time by taking advantage of the amazing value of audio books.

The fact that most of the best-selling titles now come in audio book format make it far more interesting.

To get started, go online and search for the audio book version of that book you have been dying to read. Even books that your kids or spouse love to read could be available in audio book format. If they are, they will be a great time saver for you.

Audio books can save you time, and make your commute to work enjoyable. Try it out! To download a free audio book visit Great Audio Books Online

Video Camera Secrets

How to take care of your video camera

When it comes to special occasions that need recording, a video camera will surely be one of the few items present inside the bag. In addition to the camera, a video camera is one of the mainstays of every special event in the family and with the Christmas season and Thanksgiving a few days away, video cameras of all shapes and sizes are being charged inside the homes or being bought off the shelf.

Unlike photographic cameras, which capture one-time images into still shots, video cameras can capture everything, every detail every second and every minute of the day. This is what makes video cameras so popular. It can get every scene in a flash. Nothing is missed!

If you already have your own video camera, it is important that you take care of it. Video cameras like photography cameras have very sensitive parts that you can easily damage when you are not careful. Below are some of the things that you should really watch out for.

Protecting the lens

This is the single most important part in a video camera and it is also the most expensive. If this is damaged, you will have to spend so much, sometimes even enough to buy a new video camera. It is therefore important that you always protect this part.

When storing the camera, make sure that there are no pointed objects that can scratch the lens. Most video cameras that are being sold nowadays have a special compartment for the lens. Old models have lens covers that will protect it from scratches.

When holding the camera, it is important that you loop the strap in your hands or around your neck. This is a safety precaution just in case you accidentally drop the camera. At least, it will not fall on the floor! Dropping the camera is a major no-no because the lens can easily break.

Taking care of the memory card

Although most video cameras have internal memory, which you can use, new models have expandable options. Now, users can add on to the internal memory by using memory cards. In fact, some do not even use the internal memory anymore as this can only slow down the processes of the camera.

To take care of the memory cards, it is important that you place them in a special case, which will protect them from sharp objects or hard ones that can damage its delicate parts.

Lengthening the life of the battery

Although most are probably not charging their batteries according to what the manual says, it is still important that you try to follow the manual every now and then. The general rule is to actually drain the battery first before fully charging it. Fully charging it means that you should not pull the plug until the battery is charged completely. Not charging it fully and not draining the battery before charging can actually cut short or lessen the battery life.

The initial charging of the battery is another area that you should take special attention of. Depending on what the manual says, the battery is often charged for more than 12 hours, sometimes even the whole day. It is vital that the instructions for the initial charging are followed as this can affect the performance of the battery.

Who Wins The Home Theater War? Plasma Or LCD?

It’s become one of the great home theater rivalries…Plasma television versus LCD. Which one do you buy as the showpiece for your best home theater system? Plasma or LCD?

Maybe it’s a guy thing… I’m not sure but when I went shopping for my television, my better half, my gorgeous wife or “she who must be obeyed”… call her what you like, just didn’t seem to care what type of television I purchased, Plasma or LCD, just as long as it produced a good quality picture.

Let’s make some comparisons about the respective merits of either version. When setting up a home theater center the television is the centerpiece so you want to make sure you get this right. I will list what I consider the advantages of either type.

Plasma Advantages

1. Definitely screen size. Plasma tv’s are available in size from 32 inches, all the way up to over 100 inches. Certainly an advantage if you prefer the bigger screens.

2. Viewing angle is an interesting debate. Some say plasma while others say LCD. Maybe plasma “by a nose” but there is nothing in it. LCD’s have improved markedly though and are rapidly gaining the upper hand in this area.

LCD Advantages

1. LCD tv’s are definitely tougher and more durable, not that you’ll be tossing the thing around the back yard! They certainly hold the upper hand in the “durability stakes.”

2. Installation is usually a breeze with LCD’s where plasmas require a little more installation know how.

3.LCD’s are lighter although this could have something to do with the fact they are smaller however, they are also thinner than plasmas. Whether this is an advantage I’m not sure and in the end, it may be up to “the eye of the beholder!”

As you can see, there is not a lot of difference in my opinion.

Life Span

There is always an argument for and against concerning plasma and LCD life span but to be honest, there is not much difference between either version. You could reasonably expect to get 15-20,000 hours use from either television before backlights need to be replaced however, replacing an LCD part will cost you more than a plasma at this stage of the evolution in technology.

Picture Issues

LCD’s are perhaps more consistent in the area of picture brightness during normal conditions of light but under home theater situations, plasma will have the edge.

Pixel issues are again line ball with both plasma and LCD having their for against arguments. Burn-in issues were once a drawback with plasmas but technology in recent years has “levelled the playing field” in this area.

Which Is Best?

I’d rate plasmas as the choice television for a home theater set up. Let’s face it, you’ll more than likely use your home theater to catch up on plenty of movies. However, with technology advancing so rapidly, LCD’s are gaining more and more of a foothold.

What did I buy? Plasma. Why? Because in the end, I got a great deal on a set which was on sale and hard to resist at the price. I’m betting this may ultimately sway your decision as well. And yes, my better half was more than pleased!
