Taking Care of Upholstered Furnishings

Most of us have some upholstered furniture, but not all of it is the same. You need to understand the basics of fabric care and how to clean it. This can also help before the fact, as you consider how easy it is going to be to take care of furniture before you actually buy it.

Vacuuming Upholstery
Furnishings turn a room into a comfortable place to relax. If you take care of them properly, you’ll also keep furnishings looking good while they contribute to your enjoyment. If your house has very young children or pets, it may be an extra chore to maintain upholstered furniture, but it would be well worth your effort to do so carefully.

It’s pretty simple to avoid some types of damage to your upholstered furniture. For example, to avoid fading fabrics, don’t “let the sunshine in” — at least when it comes to direct exposure for your upholstery. Indirect sunlight is best in this case, and you can control the light with curtains, blinds, drapes or shades. For quick cleanup, keep moist wipes close by to deal with spills as soon as they happen.

Vacuuming
The best way to keep your upholstery clean over the long term is to vacuum frequently. This will help prevent dirt, dust and stains from becoming embedded in your upholstery fibers and helps keep them looking new.

Here are some quick tips on vacuuming:

  • Before you start, check for worn spots in the fabric, debris they could clog your vacuum, and loose buttons and threads.
  • Tighten or repair buttons before you vacuum, and clip loose threads.
  • If your vacuum has a soft brush attachment come use it. Keep this attachment free of oily residue and clean in general. You can also buy two of these attachments and use one just for your upholstery. A crevice tool will also help you clean a tight spots in corners.

Cleaning Upholstery

Crucial tip: Always make sure to follow cleaning label and furniture manufacturer instructions before you apply any product to your upholstery.

Deep clean: Depending on how soiled you furniture gats and its color and pattern, deep clean your furniture every year or two. You can do this with do-it-yourself cleaners, commercial cleaning, or phone cleaners.
Avoid soaking the fabric or furniture structure with upholstery cleaner.
Rinse well to get rid of all soap residue so that dirt is not attracted to your now clean upholstery.

You should use a cleaning product that has a soil retardants so that future stains are somewhat prevented. If you’re not sure, check the directions on the label or talk with a professional cleaner about the effectiveness and use of soil retardants. If you have a problem with frequent soiling, a soil retardant that is in spray silicone form can prevent stains and dirt from setting. If this type of treatment was done by the manufacturer prior to your purchase, such as with ScotchguarI, make sure you use compatible cleaning products whenever you clean your piece of furniture.

It’s inevitable that you’re going to get spills, especially if you have small children. To keep your furniture clean, look at the care instructions or keep the instructions handy in a household notebook. Test your cleaning method first on the spot that’s not easily seen, and if there’s still a ring around the stain after you clean it come you’ll need to deep clean the entire cushion or piece of furniture.

Blot spills to get them up, and don’t rub them. Do this as quickly as you can with a white or light colored rag, or with a white paper towel. Don’t use colored towels or paper towels with print on them because this could transfer dye or ink to the piece of furniture.
If you’ve had a particularly large spill, remove as much of the spill before you clean with a clean rag, piece of toweling, etc., then blot the rest up and treat the stain the remains.

Remove slipcovers to spot clean, so that you know that the upholstery under the slip cover is not soiled. You can also place a clean folded towel under the slipcover to protect the upholstery while you spot clean the slipcover on the furniture.

Removing pet hair
You can remove pet hair quite easily with a clothes brush that has either a napped fabric head or a bristle head to collect pet hair. You can also look for a brush like this to be sold in pet stores. If you have nothing else in the house and you really need to pick up pet hair, it’s pretty easy. Just wrap masking tape around your hand, with the sticky side out, and brush along the furniture to pick up loose hair and lint.

The Basics of Fabric
Cotton fabrics are often used for upholstery, but how durable they are depends on their finish and weave. If the cotton fabric has been prewashed, as is often true of slipcovers, you should be able to clean it with soap and water. Check the manufacturer’s recommended cleaning method before you clean anything, though. Cotton fabrics will fade if you leave them in direct sunlight.

Cotton blends are a great choice for families, because their kid friendly and sturdy. Apply a stain resistant finish to make them easier to clean.

Canvas is a good choice for family room furniture or other furniture that’s going to get lots of rough-and-tumble use because it’s really durable. It does show grime and hold onto dirt particles, however, so vacuum frequently. If it’s prewashed, you can probably pop smaller slipcovers into the washing machine instead of trying to spot clean them.

If your covering is damask, this is a formal choice and should be vacuumed gently and brushed without breaking threads.

Microfibers are a great new addition to home furnishings, with a large color range and a soft and pleasant feel. They also are stain resistant and can usually be cleaned quite easily with soap and water. This is a good choice if you have children.

Wool and wool blends are durable and sturdy, and are good to use on chairs and sofas. Blends are pretty easy to spot clean, but you should check your manufacturer’s recommended cleaning method before you clean.

Silk is very delicate and only suitable for areas used by adults, such as formal living rooms. If it gets soiled, it has to be professionally cleaned. Keep it out of direct sunlight to avoid fading.

Sunbrella fabrics are superior for stain resistance, and can be used either indoors or out. They’re also sturdy and stand well against fading. They’re a great choice for busy families.

Leather furniture can be a good choice; damp wipe or vacuum as you need to, using very little water. If it needs to be cleaned, use saddle soap or leather conditioner, buffing thoroughly after you clean to remove any residue.

Suede furniture can be vacuumed with a soft brush attachment. Only clean with leather cleaners specifically made for suede. You can remove small spots with art gum erasers, but do not clean with water.

Is Your Home Adequately Ventilated?

If you are a home building contractor, you already know everything you need to about ventilating a home to keep it insulated and safe. Yet, many homeowners want to ensure their homes are adequately ventilated without paying hefty consulting and contracting fees each time they have a question or make a repair. That is why it helps to understand something about your home’s ventilation system and learn how to handle some of the minor adjustments yourself.

Every home needs to be adequately heated to protect family members from getting sick or developing hypothermia. But too much heat can feel uncomfortable during the warm season or in tropical climates and promote the growth of mold or other bacterial invasions that require a warm, moist environment to grow and thrive. A home’s thermostat that is linked to the heating and cooling system provides much of the temperature control a family needs to be comfortable year-round. But attic space permitting air flow can increase your home’s comfort level by preventing moisture buildup and promoting air exchange during temperature extremes outdoors.

An attic ventilator usually provides this needed service. Since the attic is separate from the sealed part of the house that receives warm and cold air from the furnace and air conditioner, it is the ideal place to circulate indoor air outside, and outdoor air inside, to break up air pockets that can nurture mold, bacteria, and other unwanted germs. If your attic ventilator, which is usually perched on the highest point of the attic, proves inadequate, you may want to consider adding soffit vents beneath the eaves and used with a continuous ridge vent for maximum airflow.

If you are not sure how to tackle the problem of installing soffit vents, ask someone whose home maintenance work you trust for advice or help. Alternatively, you can pick up a handyman’s manual or a ventilation guide to learn how to do this procedure yourself. Check out part prices at local hardware stores for an idea of how to budget your ventilation adjustment. Also be sure you have all the needed tools beforehand, along with a few spare parts, if needed.

Venting your home appropriately can reduce the level of toxic emissions or fumes. It also may keep everyone from getting sick as often or passing around the current flu bug, since air that is circulating can make it difficult for germs to grow. Check out your attic to make sure there is good cross ventilation and that your current ventilation system is working properly. Then decide whether this would be a good time to consider adding soffit vents for increased airflow. Try to get it done in good weather so you won’t have to work outdoors or in a chilly attic when it’s rainy or cold outside.

How To Get Rid Of Fruit Flies With A Homemade Fruit Fly Trap

Anyone who has ever left a few bananas sitting out or forgotten to change their garbage knows all too well the problem with fruit flies. It seems that once they’ve invaded your kitchen, you can’t get rid of them. You can scrub, clean, remove tempting fruit and spray the garbage can with disinfectants, but they always come back. You can’t help but cringe just looking at them.

We have always had problems with fruit flies, with one of the main reasons being that we live in an apartment and by law – must recycle. Because of where we live, we have to keep our recycling containers inside until they can be disposed of once a week. If the recyclables aren’t cleaned well enough after being used, they make a perfect breeding ground for fruit flies. They love bits of rotting food remnants and seem to thrive in even the smallest amount. When fruit flies move in, they just don’t want to leave and will lay eggs in and on anything they can find – fruits & vegetables left on the counter, sink drains, garbage disposals, empty bottles & cans, garbage bags, and even mops and rags.

A Few Fun Facts About Fruit Flies:

- Can lay up to 500 eggs at a time

- Their entire lifecycle is complete in about a week

- While considered mainly a pest, they have the potential to contaminate food with dangerous bacteria

We all know that removing the food, getting rid of the garbage & cleaning up plays a big role, but we also know what it’s like to move a piece of fruit and have a swarm of fruit flies fill the air only to escape your attempts at killing them. Where are they gonna go? Obviously the ones flying around can’t be easily captured or killed, so they’ll linger about until they find some other place to lay eggs and the whole cycle starts again.

In all my attempts, I found the best way to capture and remove the ones that escape is to create a simple trap using a jar, plastic wrap and a piece of food. Here’s how it works:

1. Get a small jar you don’t plan on using again ( like a baby food jar or something similar ) and wash it out well. Make sure it is not a jar with a funky smell such as a used pickle jar or anything that use to have strong spices. You want a clean, odorless jar.

2. Take a chunk of banana and place inside the jar. This is why you want a clean, odorless jar – so that the banana smell won’t be overpowered by other not-so-tempting smells. Banana seems to work the best, but you can experiment.

3. Fit a piece of plastic wrap over the top of the jar, making sure that it fits tight and well sealed around the edges. Then take a pen or pencil and poke 4 to 5 holes in the plastic, just big enough for a fruit fly to fit into. Once a fruit fly crawls in, it can’t get out. You would think they would just fly back out through the holes, but they won’t!

4. Place the jar in an area where you have seen the most fruit flies. Depending on the amount of fruit flies you have, you can expect to start seeing the jar fill up within just a few hours. After 24 hours, you will discover just how bad your fruit fly problem is!

This simple, inexpensive & safe method works perfectly and if you don’t want the jar on public display, you can always slip it behind the garbage can, in the cupboard or even under the sink (Just don’t forget about it!). You will want to empty the jar every 3-4 days before any eggs have a chance to hatch. While adult fruit flies can’t easily escape through the holes, their maggots can very easily, and besides that – they are disgusting to see crawling around in the jar. You don’t want to see these things crawling on your counter!

Cleaning out the jar shouldn’t be a problem. If you have a kind heart, you can choose to let them go outside. Personally, I spray the little buggers with bug spray, wash out the jar and start the whole process over again if I think there are still some fruit flies left to capture.

For bad fruit fly problems, you will want to use this method for a good two weeks to make sure you’ve captured the majority of fruit flies. You might even want to use a few jars in different places. Before long, your kitchen will be back to normal.

How to Hang Decorative Wall Mirrors

One way to add an elegant and distinctive touch of personality to any room in your home is to add a decorative wall mirror. These reflective works of art will express your personal creative good taste to the room in which they hang. With a plethora of styles, shapes and sizes, there is a good chance that you will find one to match the decor of any room in your home.

After you have explored all the styles, shapes and sizes and you have made your final decision, you want to be sure that when you mount your mirror that the mounting is done correctly. You want to be sure that you have done your homework and will have your mirror mounted safely on the wall. You don’t want to walk into the room and find your wall damaged and heaven forbid, find your new mirror shattered on the floor.

What you want to do is take the necessary steps, when hanging your mirror on the wall, to install this wall art correctly the first time around. When done the correct way, you will never have to worry about any accidents happening.

So now you have the wall mirror of your choice. You have selected the wall to hang it on. You have also selected the exact position on the wall to hang it.

The first thing you have to do is have someone hold the mirror against the wall where you want the mirror to hang, while you mark the wall with a pencil a short line somewhere near the center of each side of the mirror. Each line drawn can be as short as half an inch.

Now remove the hand held mirror from the wall and place it somewhere out of the way. You should now have four lines marked on the wall representing the outside perimeters of your reflective art piece. Using a ruler, measure where the center of your left and right side pencil lines will be. Make a pencil mark on the wall where the center is.

With the use of an electronic stud finder, go across the inside area that you have marked until you have an indication of where the wooden studs are located inside the wall. Once you find the studs make a pencil mark indicating where each stud is located.

On the back side of your wall mirror, look for where the mirror hanger attached to the back side of the mirror is located. Measure the distance where the hanger is located from the top of the mirror. Now go to the wall you have just pencil marked. From your top pencil mark, go down the center and mark on the wall, with pencil, exactly where the hanger will be located on the wall when the mirror is hung.

If your mirror has more than one hanger attached to the back side, then measure how far apart each hanger is from the center of the mirror. After you have measured the locations of the hangers, make the pencil markings on the wall where they will be located when the mirror is hung on the wall.

With an electric screwdriver, screw a wall clip on to the wall using a wood screw large enough and long enough to go through the wall and deep into the wooden stud inside the wall. If only one wall clip is necessary, make sure the clip is firmly attached to the wall and hang your mirror.

If your wall mirror requires two wall clips, then with a device called a level, go across the two screw hole markings you have marked on the wall and make any adjustments necessary to make sure your markings are level with each other.

When you are sure that your screw hole markings are level, go ahead and screw on the two wall clips using an electric screwdriver and a wood screw large enough and long enough to go through the wall and deep into the wooden stud inside the wall. Always make sure your wall clips are securely attached to the wall before hanging your decorative wall mirror. Now hang your mirror.

With the proper tools and techniques hanging a decorative wall mirror is something most anyone can do. Within a few minutes this job can be completed and the results will be a reflection of the artful creativity in you.

Outdoor Siding Decision Making

What type of siding you decide on as the finish for your outer walls of your home is going to depend on several things. First, you want to buy something that is going to be compatible with the style of your home. Secondly, you are going to want to buy something that is durable and going to last for a good many years. Then you are going to want to buy something that is going to fit in with the color scheme of the rest of your outdoor decor. Finally, you are going to want to buy something that is within the price range you can afford.

One favorite type siding is wood siding. Many individuals really enjoy the natural wood look. This is going to depend on the style of your home. If you have an ultra modern home, you are more than likely not going to want to go with the natural wood.

Natural wood gives a rustic look and there is a great variety of types of wood from which to choose. For example, there is cedar pine, fir and many other types as well. Another point that you want to remember if you are going with wood siding is that you can get a variety of looks as the boards can be cut differently and come in various shapes and can be mounted differently as well.

If you have an average ranch-style type home or two-story home then you may want to consider vinyl siding. Many people find it most convenient because it is economical it can be put up quickly and it is quite durable.

If you have a Tudor style home then you may want to go with the stucco and quite often you will see heavy boards embedded into the stucco to give it its Tudor style look.

Most often, if an individual has brick home they will normally want to stay with it unless the bricks are badly deteriorated. They may decide that they want to refinish the bricks and most likely, the best way to do this is to have them sandblasted and then have them any damaged ones replaced.

One thing that you want to remember is that if you are having your siding professionally done then make sure that you get some sort of warranty to go with it. Ideally you want something that is going to last you for many years so therefore there should be a warranty to back this up. There have been cases where there was no warranty issued and the siding had to be replaced within 5 to 7 years. This is not a situation that you want to end up in.

Why Go With Professional Hardwood Floor Installation?

There are very few men who are not ego driven and believe that they are possessed with the ability to rebuild the Berlin Wall. However, if you are one of those handy housemen who question your ability to drive a thumbtack in a cardboard box then you may want to seriously consider hiring a professional for hardwood floor installation instead of relying upon sheer luck and expectations to complete this task.

Don’t even trouble yourself with taking a trip to the neighborhood hardware store to purchase some kit that claims to teach any novice hard wood floor installer the art of this craft. Installing hardwood floors requires some basic skills, but equally requires knowledge and experience in the craft. If you’ve never so much as seen a level or used a basic handsaw, then it is highly recommended that you contact a hardwood floors installation professional.

A lot of times, when men or even some women attempt to do things like installing ceramic tiles or hardwood floors, they hardly ever take into consideration the post hardwood floor installation requirements. You want to make certain that your floor is level before installing hardwood floors because an un level floor can – and will – create unwanted problems.

Have you ever pull up a carpet and found concrete under it instead of wood? Well, welcome to the world of no sub flooring. Sub flooring requires installing a layer of wood on top of the concrete in order to level out the floor before actually installing your new wood floor. That concrete is actually the initial slab that is commonly called your foundation, and not all foundations are level. Without proper leveling of the foundation, the entire floor could possibly sag.

Most older homes will encounter this problem so if your home is pushing 30 to 40 years of living, then it’s recommended that you seek professional help with installing a hardwood floor. If you’ve been living in your home for over thirty years, there’s a strong possibility you are pushing sixty years old yourself which is even more of a reason to hire a professional to install your hardwood floor.

In a nutshell, a professional hardwood floor installation requires skilled and well-trained craftsmen especially if the only form of manual labor you have experienced is moving furniture. Also, keep in mind that there are other alternatives besides a hardwood floor.

Consider laying carpet or ceramic tiles if a hardwood floor is out of the question. Installing linoleum floors is said to be lot more easier to install over sub flooring and some say installing ceramic tiles is a piece of cake on level foundation.

Take time out and rethink what you may be undertaking. Seriously consider hiring a professional hardwood floor installer instead of spending more time and money on a craft you have no experience in. It will definitely be worth your while. Let your fingers do the walking through the yellow pages or visit your favorite search engine online, and a professional hardwood floors installer will be on his way in no time.

When it comes to hardwood floor installation you can tackle it yourself or seek professional hardwood floor installation, each of which has its advantages

Detecting Problems in Window Air Conditioners

Just like any other cooling machine, window air conditioners are designed to give comfort and ease to the users. Its ability to transform hot, humid air into a cooling sensation gives the very comfort that people need once they install one of these units. Also considered as through-the-wall units, this type of conditioning system is actually the smallest of these self-contained machines.

Although its ratings for its efficiency are not as good as central systems as well as the property of reduced versatility because it can only service the room where it is stationed, it nevertheless compromises its ability to function as designed.

These devices are built with filters to capture dirt and unwanted particles such as pollutants; window air conditioners also require regular routine check-ups and cleaning.  Not only does the filter need washing, but the condenser coil located at the back of the unit can also be a source of lots of debris therefore a thorough and perhaps more efficient cleaning using certain chemical cleaning agents will be helpful.

Checking on these parts is important as this may interfere with the flow of air and thereby reducing the efficiency and the quality of the output of the unit. Routine check-ups will also sue away insects such as wasps and hornets from building their nests inside your cooling unit.

Other animals such as house rats can also be prevented from making your machine their comfort room or their safe haven. Aside from ensuring that the circulating air is fresh and good as expected, you are also assured of having your unit for a longer period for presence of those mentioned animals will surely cause serious damage to your unit.

Owners of window air conditioners often encounter other problems. Sometimes they are just plugged and long forgotten unless a problem is detected. With this, owners should be reminded of some troubles you might encounter with your unit and how important it is to take care of them for you not to encounter any of these:

  • Dirty and even rusting coils and filters – cleaning the filters and vacuuming those coils when the unit is turned off will do the trick. Since these parts constantly encountered dirt and are the collectors of these materials, you must ensure that filters are replaced at least once a month.  Ensuring that these parts are cleaned as regularly as possible will also ensure that your unit will function well and that your electric bill will not be a pain in your head.
  • Leaking unit – this only suggest that perhaps your unit was not positioned properly. For proper drainage, make sure that the unit is tilted outwards.
  • Fan has stopped blowing – this connotes that your fan may need replacement. Put some oil first on the blades while the unit is unplugged. When this still does not work then the unit may need a new motor.

Window air conditioners are becoming a common appliance in many homes. Before purchasing one, do some research in order to make a wise purchase.

The Security Features of Landscape Lighting

If you are thinking about adding some landscape lighting to your yard there are two main reasons you should add landscape lights. The first reason is simple because you want to add an extension of enjoyment for your yard to be enjoyed at night. The second reason is something that not too many people think about, and that is the reason of security.

Homes with landscape lighting look much nicer as well and can give you the security of curb appeal. In this current recession, people want to do everything they can to improve their home’s worth as homes are deteriorating in value around the country. Landscape lighting adds some value to your home because it accentuates the hard work you have put into your landscaping. It also makes your home look more inviting and gives it a very warm demeanor.

It’s a fact that less homes are broken into that have landscape lighting. Not only will landscape lighting deter most criminals, it also gives you some other types of securities. Having worked in the real estate and mortgage business for years, I often heard about people that had been sued because someone slipped and fell on their property. One common factor in many of these stories is that these accidents happened at night when they couldn’t see. When I was growing up my parents had a long sidewalk walkway on the side of the house. At night it was very dark and hard to see where you were going. I was always scared to walk on that side of the house at night because as a child I was scared. My parents did add lighting eventually and it made that side of the house beautiful. We had rose bushes that were accentuated at night and i was no longer scared to go on that side of the house at night. Not only can it curb children’s fears of the dark, but by adding landscape lighting it will save you a lot of money as people will be much more less likely to hurt themselves if they can see where they are going.

We hope that as you are deciding on landscaping fixtures that you think about these security features that come with adding landscape lighting. While considering the security aspect, make sure you pick lights that will light up walkways, driveways, and especially steps within your yard. We are excited for you to extend the love you have for your yard into the night hours and hope you can sleep easy knowing your property is a little more secured.

Bathroom Sinks and More Current Trends

Remodeling trends are continuously changing, especially since many homeowners are keeping their homes longer. Just a while ago, the housing boom allowed people to move more often, and the changes they made within the home were done to improve the resale value of the property, not to improve their needs specifically. Yet, there are many great new trends, and some not so great, that can provide a range of unique opportunities for those looking for a new way to dress up their home, right down to bathroom sinks.

New Trends

Some of the remodeling trends you will see with bathroom sinks including making a statement with bolder colors or brighter colors that help to improve the quality of the room. Another option is using acrylic or fiberglass sinks and tub coverings rather than replacing the entire unique. They are face, simple and give a brand new finish instantly. Floor trends include improving the quality of the flooring. Some trends that are popular include those that use concrete as a flooring type instead of tiling. Because it has a unique look, is durable and offers a long term benefit, it works well in some situations.

Fixtures Make Statements Too

When it comes to making simple and quick changes to the bathroom sinks, tubs and other areas of the bathroom, it may just need some updating of the fixtures. Remodeling trends are favoring more chrome and gold in these rooms. These offer better quality than clear plastic or resin products that were used just a few years ago. Quality and a better appearance make them more interesting and more attractive.

Another option for the bathroom redo includes getting rid of the traditional tub and instead replace it with a sunken tub or even a Jacuzzi. What makes this particularly attractive is the fact that these items are becoming more affordable as well as becoming more readily available. That means they can be used more readily in bathroom remodels. Some new construction homes even have these units being installed already in the construction of the home. Still, with the wide range of unique options available, this is just the start.

Not all of these remodeling trends in bathrooms are the best choice for those who have a specific budget, or those that are looking for more unique designs. Rather, they are an option for those that want to follow the current trends and really get an inspirational look and feel.
