Acid Stained Floors and Decorative Concrete

Published by Montgomery Decorator under Flooring

Acid stained floors are simply extraordinary flooring alternatives if you are tired of carpet, tile and wood flooring. Acid stained floors offer warm earthy tones or vibrant hues, there are simply unlimited color options and your contractor can even do custom colors.

All concrete surfaces can be stained inside or outside new or existing concrete. The process usually takes about five days start to finish but the results are incredible. If you are thinking about having stained floors there are some simple precautions that should be taken in order to save you money and to assure you that your floor will turn out properly.
New concrete should be covered with plastic to protect it from stains from other trades such as painters plumbers etc… all stains on any concrete surface have to be removed before staining can take place and this can be an added expense to having your floor done. Acid stains are translucent and may not take stain in areas that have previous stains on them such as paint. Rule of thumb is that if you know you are going to have an acid stained floor then you should cover it if possible.

If you have old concrete that has a lot of stains then there are other options such as micro toppings. A micro topping is a new concrete surface that is applied from paper thin up to 1″ thick. Micro toppings can be used to fill imperfections in the surface Micro toppings can also be used for different affects such as a rock texture, slate texture, spray textures etc… and micro toppings can be stained.

A few years ago I started playing around with micro toppings on other surfaces such as plywood, tile and marble. We have come up with a way to put a micro topping over plywood in the interior section of our home that does not have a concrete surface. The result of our new technique is a allergen free and easy to clean surface with vibrant colors and earthy tones. This technique can also be applied over tile as long as the tile is not coming loose. This saves the consumer the cost of tear out and disposal of other flooring products.

Another option that is hitting the flooring market pretty hard right now is metallic epoxy, if you are looking for a real neat effect in a one of a kind floor look at the metallic epoxy. Metallic epoxy is a coating it starts with a prime coat of 100% solids epoxy and then the metallic epoxy is applied a day later. There are different effects that can be achieved with metallic epoxy such as spraying denatured alcohol, or acetone on top of the metallic epoxy when it is wet to achieve a mottled look. Use a leaf blower to blow the epoxy around to achieve a rippled look. These techniques should only be done by trained professionals as you can also ruin a floor if not done properly. When done properly metallic epoxy has a strong look of an acid stained floor.

Maintenance on a acid stained floor is simply done with micro fiber mops, or a mild detergent such as simple green. Do not use any cleaners that are abrasive. If your floor should start to look dull a simple coat of a mop on wax such as uro finish from colormaker floors can be applied to renew the shine and it will make that floor look new again.

Decorating Your Home on Budget

When decorating your home, working with a budget can sometimes present trouble, especially if it’s a small one. Although decorating budgets can be difficult to stick to, you need to realize that they’re necessary. When decorating a home, no homeowner should have to go into debt. So be sure to set a budget and then follow these simple tips for sticking with it. Then you can have a wonderfully decorated home without breaking the bank.

Make the Decorating Budget Firm
You don’t want to set a decorating budget and then forget about it when you actually start shopping. Keep in mind that you are setting a budget for a reason. Remember, you don’t necessarily have to do all your decorating at once. It might be better to do some of the decorating now, and then once you save some more money, revisit the room to add more items later. It’s best to stick to your budget firmly, no matter what comes up.

You Will Have to Give a Little to Get a Little
With a firm budget in your hand, you’re going to have to be flexible and willing to compromise in some areas. If you want the more expensive items that you absolutely have to have, then you’ll have to go the cheaper route for certain less crucial items. So if you’re adamant about adding that coffee table that costs about a third of your budget, then you’ll have to compensate elsewhere, perhaps spending less on window treatments or picture frames for the wall.

Don’t Worry What Other People May Think
It’s so easy to get caught up in what other people will think and say. After all, if the figurine you find is perfect for your décor, does it really matter if you found it at the local discount store? Unless you say something, no one’s going to know what you paid for items in your home. It’s not necessary that everything in your room is of the highest quality. So if you find something you really like and it’s inexpensive and it fits in your budget, then go ahead. Buy it. Don’t worry about what others are going to say. It’s funny, but sometimes the least expensive item in the room will garner the most positive attention.

Invest in Quality for the Big Items in the Room
When you plan out your budget, it’s best to allocate the majority of your money toward the larger items like a oak bed in a master bedroom or a dining room table, thus making sure that you can afford quality that will last. Window treatments or other décor just don’t need as much money put into them as items such as wood furniture, flooring, and artwork. By investing in quality for the larger items like a , you can ensure that those items will last longer and look better. In the end, you might have a high end sofa with inexpensive decorative pillows on it, but as long as you have kept to your final budget, then that will be just fine.

It can sometimes be tempting to throw your budget away and spend more than you can afford. Unfortunately, when you do that, then every time you walk into your redecorated home or room, you are going to have negative thoughts about that debt. In the end, negative thought might lead to you not being able to enjoy being in the space. If that becomes the case, then what was the point of spending all that money? By sticking to your budget, not only will you save money, but you will retain your peace of mind.

Laminate Wood Floor Benefits

Published by Montgomery Decorator under Flooring

The look of one’s house tells a lot about a person. Everyone has their own style, and there are many ways to change and customize your house, whether its on the inside or outside. One of the best home improvements you can do to your own house is laying laminate floor.

There are many benefits to it, even though it’s a bit costly, and rest assured its well worth it. One variable that greatly determines the total cost is whether you have the skills and knowledge to install it yourself or have a professional install it. Let’s discuss the benefits of laminate in the first place and why you might want to think about switching form carpet to this synthetic hard wood flooring in the first place.

To start of carpet is one of the most dirty, disgusting things a person can have in their house. It traps dirt, bacteria, dust, hair, dander, and sometimes even bugs that you cannot get out no matter how many times you vacuum it. So one of the big benefits to laying laminate floor is that it’s a lot cleaner. There is nothing that gets filtered through and ends up underneath it like with carpet. Carpet traps all of the debris and it ends up getting kicked back into the air when its gets stirred up and so when you have laminate, or any form of hard wood flooring, you eliminate this problem.

Another benefit is that laminate floor does not stain. It does not matter if you spill something on it as you can just take a paper towel wipe it right up. You will not have to frantically look for stain removers or costly chemicals to keep your carpet clean. All you have to do is mop the floor every once in a while and it will keep looking as if it were brand new.

It is also very durable material. It does not dent or scratch very easily, so it will last for a very long time in your house. Even if a piece of the floor does get damaged somehow, you can have a professional come in and repair it rather easily. They cut out the piece or the several pieces that are bad and put new ones in!

So laminate flooring is not only cleaner, easier to clean, repairable, and a very durable material, but it dresses up a house. It really helps your interior from an aesthetic point of view!

It has the appearance of a wood floor, which actually accentuates the other features of the house (i.e. makes the the cabinets, fireplace, or furniture more prominent). It enhances and complements a room which in turn can completely change the entire look of a house.

When people walk in your home it is really impressive for them to see a nice shiny wood floor. Even though laminate only gives the appearance of wood or stone it looks very realistic and if done right one can barely see see the gaps between the individual pieces. It comes in a large variety of shades and styles to fit any home or personal tastes.

Overall laminate flooring is the most cost effective and easiest way to improve your house. It’s cheaper than a real wood floor even though it looks just virtually identical and is much cleaner, healthier, and attractive than carpet.

For laminated floor installation advice its recommended you go to a website that is totally dedicated to educating people about laminate wood floors.

Simple and Effective Hardwood Floor Installation

Published by Montgomery Decorator under Flooring

Hardwood floor installation takes a lot of work, but you can save yourself a lot of money by learning how to do it yourself. There are even prefinished strips of wood flooring that you can use in order to make the job easier. Whichever method you choose, the entire process of installing hardwood floors is very similar, so this article will be covering just the basics that will apply to most approaches.

You begin to install hardwood floors with only the bare subfloor. For the most part, you can choose whoever type of wood you like for your floor, but red oak is commonly chosen because it looks nice and is relatively inexpensive. It is recommended that you store your flooring in the same climate that it will be installed in, this way you do not have to worry about it expanding or contracting.

The first official step of hardwood floor installation is to lay your planks down perpendicular to the wall joists. It is a good idea to mark this by placing a reference line to indicate the end of all boards. When doing this remember to leave a gap of one half inch around the entire perimeter of the room in case you need to expand later. For the first pieces, it is important that you choose the longest and straightest boards. You will have to drill holes in the face of the planks that cannot be reached using your floor stapler using a 3/8 inch diameter bit. As you will quickly find out, it is much easier to install hardwood floors when you use a stapler.

The next step to installing hardwood floors is the actually laying down of the boards for your new floor. It will make things easier on you if you choose a location for your first board that is parallel to the reference line you made earlier. You can fasten the first board with screws if you prefer, placing the holes directly over the floor joists. On occasion you may need to cut the boards so that they will fit. Be sure to use a perfectly straight piece of flooring to make sure that your pieces are aligned. You can begin using your pneumatic stapler after you have secured the first row.

The final step of hardwood floor installation is to finish laying the boards, beginning with the second row. It is recommended that you keep the end joints 6 inches apart on rows of boards that are right next to each other. There are many different techniques you can use when laying out the boards for your hardwood floor installation which is beyond the scope of this article to cover. So before you begin, this is a topic that you will want to make sure that you have researched and are comfortable with.

Adding An Electrical Box and Hiding Cables Like A Pro

Published by Montgomery Decorator under Electrical

All the electronics on the market lately are filling up our homes. There is an increasing need for more electric outlets throughout our homes. Some useful tips on how to create an electrical extension are outlined in this article.

The most common need people have is adding an additional outlet box. They never are where you need them! As with anything electrical, take proper precautions against electrical shocks and know your local codes for proper cable types, shielding plates, etc.

Sometimes it just your lucky day and the room on the other side of wall has an outlet that is very close. Back to back is ideal but even one stud off is not a problem. Just make sure the circuit won’t be overloaded by adding an additional set of plugs.

Use a stud finder and find out where the adjacent studs are for where you want to put the outlet box. Depending on the type of box you have, either cut out the proper size hole next to the stud or somewhere in the center. I prefer the renovation boxes with the tabs that are designed to fit in the drywall away from the studs. Align your box hole so it isn’t directly behind the other box as two deep boxes won’t fit back to back in a two by four stud wall.

If you are within the same studs, it is now a simple matter of running the proper wire or conduit from the old box to the new one. If you need to go one stud over, cutting your hole close to the stud makes it a little easier. From the box hole access, drill a hole in the center of the stud following proper guidelines to maintain structural integrity. Keep the hole size at a minimum and no more than 40% of the stud width.

If instead you want to extend power from an existing box in the room, there are several ways to run the wire between the boxes. One common method is to remove the baseboard trim. Then cut out some of the wall board behind the baseboard and make small notches (not to exceed 25% of the stud width) in each stud or drill holes in the center of each stud to run the cable for the extension. After installing the cable, make sure to use steel plates on each stud if you did notches to prevent any drywall screws from penetrating the wires.

If you drilled holes in the center and come to a corner, it can sometimes be problematic when it is solid. You need to drill a hole from each side until they meet. Then either fish something flexible through the hole or use two fish tapes with a hook on the end and get them to catch. Put lots of lube on the cable and pull it through.

Going around doors is a similar exercise. The best way is to remove the trim molding and usually there is enough room with minimal notching to run the cable around the door.

If you have attic or basement access, there is another way to run new cable. Drill holes through the plate where the existing circuit is and where you want to add an additional outlet. Sometimes you will run into fire stops or cross braces in the middle of the wall. If you are putting in a switch, many times you can get close enough from the switch box hole to drill through the brace. Otherwise you will need to cut out a small section of wallboard and make a notch.

There are a number of safe and effective ways to add electrical outlets throughout your home without damage and lots of work. With the use of smart safety procedures, following local codes, and some electrical work you can have extensions in all of the places your home needs.

Services Provided By Electricians

Published by Montgomery Decorator under Electrical

When discussing electrical systems, you should really consider using electricians for the work. So, what services do they provide?

There is most likely no single thing that has so changed the quality of life in as drastic a manner as electricity. Once this amazing power was understood and harnessed it opened the door for most of the other technological advances of the past century. Almost the entire world, and certainly all the developed countries, are connected to a massive power grid that provides light, heat, and air conditioning. Computers, television, radio, and many other forms of entertainment are dependent on electricity. The electrician is the person who makes all of these miracles happen.

An electrician is a person who installs, tests, and maintains the myriad of electrical systems that exist in homes, business, and factories. They generally are divided into two major groups. The first is involved in construction. These electricians install the systems. The second group is more involved in maintenance. It is their responsibility to keep the systems working and to perform the repairs to electrical equipment. In the past, the two divisions were more distinct, but lately more and more electricians perform both tasks.

Electricians work in a wide varied of conditions. Those working in construction often labor under harsh and adverse conditions. Since wiring systems are usually built into the interior of buildings, access to them for repair and upgrading is often difficult. One of the major concerns for electricians is safety. Electricity can be extremely dangerous and care must constantly be exercised when working with high voltage.

Most electricians are prepared for their career through apprenticeship programs. A high school diploma or GED is needed. Applicants for apprenticeship programs must be at least 18 years of age. Math and English skills are generally needed, and due to the color coding of wires in much electrical equipment, good color vision is a must. The future outlook for the career field is basically good. It is expected to grow in the coming years at about an average rate.

It is the safety factor that makes the need for electricians so urgent. Electrical repair is not something that lends itself well to do it yourself work. The hazards of working with electricity without proper knowledge of the safety issues are great. In addition, strict codes often require installation by qualified electricians. The electrician is the person that keeps the power flowing. Our modern world can be said to be running on electricity and the value of a qualified electrician in this process should never be underestimated.

Toggle Switches – Control Electrical Current

Published by Montgomery Decorator under Electrical

The components of an electrical system have very specific purpose. Toggle switches are one such component.

In discussing electrical use, the switch is defined as a mechanical device that allows or does not allow the flow of current. The switch is generally considered to have two positions. These are the on position and the off position. In a simple switch, when it is in the on position the electrical circuit is intact and current flows. In the off position the electrical circuit is incomplete and there is no current. The toggle switch is a type of switch that has two arms that are almost inline with each other connected by an elbow like pivot. The elbow like pivot creates a positive snap action bringing the two arms into contact when the switch moved to the on position.

In common usage, the term toggle switch has been used to describe any switching device that turns current on or off. In electrical theory, the switch is seen as a gate. The schematic symbol for a toggle switch resembles a gate. The gate idea is that when the gate is closed, contact is made and current flows through it. When the gate is open, contact is broken and no current can flow. There is no size distinction in defining a toggle switch. It can be very, very small or it can be incredibly large. Nor is it limited by function. A toggle switch can operate a single simple mechanism, or be connected to any number of devices. Turning on a toggle switch can institute a single activity or be connected to a wide number of devices causing multiple operations to commence.

The word toggle itself has come to mean the act of switching something from one state to another. Toggle is often used to indicate the action of turning something on and off in alternating sequences. A person could be said to be toggling a motor or toggling a computer program. This means they are turning it from an off state to an on state multiple times.

The concept behind the toggle switch is simple, but has far reaching implications in electrical theory. This gate theory deals with the idea that something is either in one of two states. Something is said to be on or off. It might be expressed open or closed. The open or closed gate idea means that current either passes through or it does not. Although this idea seems fairly simple, complex machinery including computers are basically run by it.

The most common types of toggle switches are simple devices used to turn on and off electric currents. Circuit breaker controls and even simple light switches are examples of toggle switches. The toggle switch is rated by the capacity of the current that flows through it in the closed position. It should be remembered how basic to the successful operation of an electrical system a toggle switch can be. It is usually not the best place to attempt to cut costs. The toggle switch puts the whole process into motion.

What Do You Know About Bathroom Shower Heads?

Published by Montgomery Decorator under Bathrooms

What do you know about bathroom shower heads? Most people can say they know they are adjustable, some are high pressure and some are handheld. People who use them every day of their lives know very little about them other than the fact they feel good when they are bathing or trying to relax. There is more to them than this, like the fact that bacteria can build in them and then spray back on your body and some are high efficiency, many are comparable in prices, faucets can be purchased to match them and some are filtered.

Variety means everything when it comes to bathroom shower heads. They are like people, some are well liked and others are unique. The antimicrobial type is made of treated plastic that helps prevent the build up of bacteria and germs that live and grow in other styles. In the process of making the plastic it is mixed with anti-mildew, anti-mold and anti-bacterial products. The antimicrobial benefits will never wear off or erode because they are built into the plastic.

Faucets are a major part of your bathroom fixtures. They vary in style, size and prices. Faucets can be purchased to match many of the high pressure or high efficiency heads. There are some can even be filtered. There are filters that are available that will attach to the side of your bathtub faucet. The water is filtered before it reaches your bathtub preventing germs and bacteria from spreading to your skin.

Most all shower heads are adjustable. They come with different spay types such as massaging, flat stream and mist. These are a great replacement for a single spray shower head because you can choose the style of spray you want from one shower to the next. Some are adjustable in terms of height as well. Many of the handheld showers have holders that are adjustable in height. These are perfect for younger children who are too short to use a regular shower.

Dual shower heads come in many shapes and sizes as does the waterfall heads. Dual bathroom shower heads give you many options such as two, three or more heads on one shower. Their variety is astounding because you can get them that spray at different angles or one that has multiple jets that spray all at the same time. Waterfall heads allow you to feel like you are standing in a downpour of rain or under a waterfall. They are perfect for a modern or contemporary style bathroom as well as for a poolside shower.

If you are looking for replacement heads, visit your local retailers or the vast number of retailers online. Many can help you choose the one that is right for your needs as well as offer you price comparison with other retailers. If you find that replacing your shower head is too much for you to handle, they can also recommend a plumber that has a good reputation.

Pros and Cons of Bathroom Shower Doors

Published by Montgomery Decorator under Bathrooms

If you are considering replacing your old shower curtain with bathroom shower doors you should consider some of the details of the doors. Both curtains and doors have their pros and cons and it is up to you to decide which style outweighs the other. There are many aspects to these doors that curtains do not have such as allowing the beauty of the tempered glass to be part of your decor. Shower curtains are usually themed in some way; whether it is nautical, solid colors or designs. Glass can also be themed but you can also show your sense of style with doors.

Bathroom shower doors have many pros to them. The fact that they come in a variety of designs make them one of the most popular ways to enclose a shower. They can be framed or frameless, sliding or bifold and are easier to clean than shower curtains. Most curtains must be replaced periodically due to mold and mildew as well as fading where shower doors are easily cleaned with a cleanser and a sponge. They cost more to install but because they are durable they will last a lifetime with very little maintenance.

One of the most popular styles of doors is the neo angle. The doors are not so much neo angle as the shower itself. The shower is designed to use the wasted space of a bathroom corner and the doors open close to the center of the room. This gives you much more space to move around and enter and exit the shower. You will find that these doors have higher prices. Neo angle shower doors come in a variety of styles just as many other types of doors. The most common are bifold shower doors.

Bifold doors can be used for any style of shower. Many homeowners are replacing their old sliding doors with bifold because they open wider than the sliding variety. They can be custom built to fit almost any size opening as well as to include the features you are looking for such as the door handle. You can purchase them in framed or frameless styles with frosted, textured or clear tempered glass. Shower curtains generally come in one or two styles; cloth or vinyl. Bifold doors will vary in price but can be inexpensive depending on the features you choose.

Which would you rather have hanging in your bathroom; custom doors or a molded, ratty shower curtain? Retailers can help you choose your shower doors and guide you to the ones that will best fit your style including the door handle. You will find that your choices in features will affect the prices. Neo angle doors may have to be special ordered by some local retailers due to the popularity of the style. The choice of bathroom shower doors is a no brainer. They are easier to maintain, won’t promote mold and mildew and bring a whole new look and feel to your bathroom.

Bathroom Shower Designs That Fit Your Style

Published by Montgomery Decorator under Bathrooms

Suppose you just moved into a new home. It is the home of your dreams with one exception; the bathroom. It is time to start looking at bathroom shower designs so you begin a renovation to make it the bathroom of your dreams. There are lots of design ideas that are inexpensive and take very little time to implement such as curtains, rods, knobs, shower heads, a shower handle, fans and lighting. Although these things are relatively easy to repair, they make a big difference in both the appearance and functionality of the room.

When you begin planning your renovation, think about the size of your bathroom. Is there enough space available to install free-standing shower stalls or will you have to use enclosures to achieve your goal? Many older homes were designed with very small bathrooms. In order to install a shower you must use enclosures or at the least shower curtains. You should also think about the structure of the room. If there is room for free-standing stalls, is the structure of the room sound enough to accommodate the weight of the stalls? Some stalls can be very heavy and this could create problems when attaching it to an existing wall.

Floor and wall tiles are also great bathroom shower designs. Choosing contrasting wall and floor tiles will draw attention to the shower area. Remember to use unglazed tiles on the floor to prevent slipping hazards when the floor gets wet. Tile is one of the most popular choices for bathrooms because they are less likely to carry bacteria and if one tile gets damaged you can use one tile as a replacement instead of replacing the entire wall or floor. This even makes the repair of water lines easier because you simply remove the tiles necessary to get to the lines and replace them when you are finished.

Lighting and fans are huge design ideas. Newly built homes include lighting and fans however older homes did not. Installing exhaust fans with lighting packages can make your bathroom more comfortable and flattering because lighting is instrumental in how we see ourselves. Fans can help prevent moisture from building in the floors and walls of the bathroom while bathing. You can brighten your bathroom and keep it cool with a few well placed lights and fans. Shower doors can also make a difference in the way you view your bathroom.

Many bathroom shower designs include glass shower doors. If you have a small bathroom, doors with a mirrored panel could help to make your bathroom look larger. They come in many styles and designs so choose the ones that fit your needs. Whether you are doing a makeover on your bathroom or just doing a replacement on strategic items such as shower heads, curtains and curtain rods, shower handle or knobs, you can make a remarkable change in the looks and functionality of your bathroom. Using bathroom shower designs to makeover your bathroom can be fun as well as an investment in your home.
